I have heard several theories. One, that he was in a sense Melkor, and I have yet to read that essay which I hope will be stupid. Cause if it is true, about the glimmer in his eye at the mere mention of the Nerzgul, then I shall heartily laugh, and I'll laugh anyway. Another is that he is a Maiar, and another "insane" one would be that he is Iluvatar. Heh. Who really knows?
