Those larger vessel were just for the purpose of...well, much like an aircraft carrier. They carry the planes, the supplies; but the planes do the actual attack. Same here. Those small boats couldn't carry enough supplies for a cross-bay strike. So they use big ships as mobile bases/supply ship.
