In discussions in Letters about plans for an animated movie adaptation of LotR, JRRT clearly favored abridgement over compression "with resultant over-crowding and confusion, blurring of climaxes, and general degradation". I think he'd rather have seen scenes that aren't crucial to the main story go rather than include them in a compressed, diminished form that also took valuable time away from the real important stuff.
