Your perception of Hollywood is similar to mine regarding the music business (which, it seems, cares little about music). When we love stories (or songs, for that matter), it's because they touch us in an intimate fashion. They mean something different to each person, and to see them tussled with can make us feel like something that's dear to us has been violated. I look forward to the films, but must admit that the idea of LOTR film-related merchandising makes me cringe. I would hate to see the day that the "Hissing Gollum Doll" (fish sold separately) becomes the "must-have" toy for the little tykes at Christmas.
