I didn't think Gimli was reduced to <I>mere</I> comic relief. They did overdo it though. I have to admit I laughed hard when he couldn't see over the wall. Gimli was a fierce warrior and fearless and cleaved orc heads as he should. I think he displayed some touching emotion at times and I love his tendency to say whatever he thinks even in the most sensitive situations. I was happy to see Legolas and Gimli competing for orc-kills. And despite the stupid tossing part, it was awesome when he and Aragorn fought in front of the gate.
