When I was 14 I had this "wierd" friend who didn't seem to speak English.She was always talking about Elves and Orcs and Hobbits... She was nice otherwise and being as I was so short on friends I thought I should at least try to understand her. I read LOTR to have something in common with her. I was HOOKED. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. It's been over 20 years and we are still best friends.
