I have never actually seen the famed 1978 cartoon version of LOTR, but I have seen the cartoon version of the Hobbit. All I can say about that is that for a good part of my life one of the reasons I shunned LOTR was because of that cartoon. The Elves did not look remotely "fair", there was this annoying theme song playing in the background all through the movie, and I thought hobbits had hairy feet, not furry feet in which the fur grew in thick clumps. The only thing redemable was Gollum, he was truly scary.
