subtle references to the book - The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum

Okay so maybe some of these aren't that subtle. I'm looking for references that have little to do with the plot and are mainly intended to please die hard fans of the book.- Gandalf and Bilbo singing "The Road goes ever on and on..."- Chapter titles as lines: "A long-expected party", " Riddles in the dark", "Shortcut to mushrooms".- Maps of the Shire and the Lonely Mountain when (in Bilbo's study and his book in Rivendell).- The Stone Trolls from the Hobbit (when Frodo is beggining to fade, right before Arwen finds them).- The Ring whispering "Elessar" when it tempts Aragorn on Amon Hen.- Aragorn's battle cry of "Elendil" when he jumps down onto the orcs from Amon Hen.Anyone spot any more

Gandalf's speach to Frodo. "So do all who live to see such times...etc." Although it takes place in a different part of the book, it is very much the same.

The scene where Bilbo and Gandalf are smoking, and Bilbo blows a smoke ring and Gandalf blows a ship made out of smoke wich floats through the ring and than both dissolve into thin air. That scene is taken directly from the Hobbit

I mentioned this in another thread. The ring changes size when held up by Isildur. great. Legalos at the doors of Moria he's standing right up under one of those elven trees. Thought that was so great because of Legalos's fear of going into the mines. Oh yeah, the Watcher wraps its tentacles around those trees and pulls them down. this is way subtle, but I think it still counts. When Bilbo's running around Bag End looking for food he says, "oh, we've got some cold chicken and pickles." or something like that. In The Hobbit at the unexpected party, Gandalf asks Bilbo to bring out the cold chicken and pickles and it annoys Bilbo because it seemed that Gandalf knew the inside of his pantries better than he did.Also, in the fight between the forces of Mordor and the last alliance of elves and men, there is an elf there with a spear that it does a short close up of. It could of been Gil-Galad and his famed spear Aiglos, or maybe I'm just dreaming.

When the balrog shows up, the camera work lays emphasis on Legolas' look of terror. Although he doesn't actually identify the Balrog, its a nice way of suggesting he's seen them before.

I thought that legolas walking on the snow was very good, a lot of people didn't notice the first time they saw it.

I'm not sure exactly where Gil-galad is during the battle, but i think he is the one shown right before Elendil (holding Narsil above his head) when the line is "victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone".(I assume) he is the one who knocks down an orc, then turns his spear upside down and rams it down on the orc with a very satisfied grunt. (then Elendil with Narsil is shown and the line above is spoken...)

No, they did it right, gil-gald should have dark hair. Galadriel wa the only one of the house of Finwe(well, actually,all the noldor) to have blonde hair

i remember another lil subtle reference to the book, where sauraman is talking about moria and looks at the picture of the door, which is exactly the same as in the book, and also the picture of the balrog, which is in my publication of the book!

woooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh wait wait wait "seen". Had legolas seen a balrog before? yeah i know its of topic.In amon hen they sort of show that it is the chair of "seeing" because frodo sees barad dur from that seat.

The Battle between Gandalf and the Balrog was the same as in the book.. The Balrog first swinging whit a sword and then whit a whip, and of course Gandalf saying: "Run!! You Fools!!"

Lady_Báin, my belief is that Legolas had not seen a balrog before yet he knew what it was because in the Silmarillion the elf Glorfindel battled and killed a balrog so that was a story that was probably very popular with the elves. That's what I think anyone agree/disagree?
