I agree with The Only Real Estel. The mithril protected him from being pinned to the wall, not from internal bleeding. Forunately for Frodo though, hobbits are a bit hardier than normal, boring people. So although he wasn't skewered like you were meant to think, I would imagine that it had to hurt enough to knock him out. Or at least send him into some short of shock... think about it for a minute... it'll make sense. p.s. Welcome to the Downs, Nehani!
