Remember in the book, while Frodo is running ahead with Shelob in hot pursuit, Sam is prevented from following by Gollum, who is trying to throttle him. Then, thanks to a fortuitous head butt, Sam escapes Gollum's clutches and runs to Mr. Frodo's rescue. Only to find that he is (SOB!) TOO LATE!...anyway, that better be how they do it.
