This is off my comment to the string about what scenes had better be done correctly in the movie. I said:
quote:
All I can say is that the last line of the movie had darn well better be Samwise Gamgee sitting at a table with a child on his lap, and dinner in front of him saying "well, I'm home." Or else Peter Jackson is getting a rather nasty letter from me.

I also told this to a friend of mine when we were discussing the fact that we bought over 20 seats to the premier in my town and are putting together a little party of LotR freaks to go together. She shared a rumor that she had heard. I will warn you now; it could or could not be correct and could or could not spoil the end of the movie. If you do not want to hear a possible spoiler, LEAVE NOW!
Okay: she said that they aren't even going to show the Shire in RotK! Which means that the movie will, essentially, end after the ring is destroyed. We don't see Frodo go his way, or Merry or Pippin. We don't even see the above scene with Sam and Rosie and the child. (Which child was it again? I don't remember and have leant out my book.) The movie is just going to end, presumably, with some speech by Gandalf similar to the one he made at the end of TTT. Something about peace reigning and all the sacrifices made, blah, blah blah. What makes me mad is that Tolkein's books aren't just about the war, they're not even just about the ring, but that's what the movie is doing. It's taking the magic out of Tolkien's world. By cutting out the shire scene I feel that it is sending the message that the war is the only thing important. Peace and everything that occured afterward means nothing. The book was about more than that, and I think that Jackson needs to remember that.
What does everyone else think?

I think it's just another false rumor. Considering the comments I've read from a viewer of an advanced screening, and the fact that the last two songs on the ROTK soundtrack are titled "The Grey Havens" and "Into the West", I think it is safe to state with certainty that the Grey Havens scene and the return to the Shire will be in the movie. Now whether or not it ends with "Well, I'm back", as I sincerely hope it will (it's Elanor on Sam's lap, by the way), I don't know.

In my opinion I am sure that the "Well, I am back" scene will be in the movie but I don't think it will be the last scene. I am expecting a voice over by Galadriel at the very end telling what happened to each character like the apendixes in the book.

As I heard, the last scene/line will be Sam going into Bag End and saying "Well, I'm back".

In my opinion, I think Sam will have Elanore on his lap, next to Rosie, and then there will be a zoom out on the shire while Gandalf or Galadriel talked and the movie faded out. Well, that's in my opinion.

Supposedly the very last shot is of the door at Bag End with Sam saying that line. The source is basically 99.9% accurate ( ) So I'd trust that.

That is what I heard about the ending. But I haven't heard anything about how it's going to end for about... a year and a half. So that might have changed, but I think it would make a good ending.

We know for certain that they cast Sean Astin's daughter as Elanor, so I'd say the "Well, I'm back" is probably in.
