As Aragorn in the movies was hiding from his heritage, it makes sense for him to only get the sword reforged after he decides to become king. In the book he is wanting to be king, and so it makes more sense for the sword to be reforged as he sets out on his quest to regain the kingship and overthrow Sauron.
