I'd compare the Elves to the Native Americans

Although the points you made to back this up are interesting, I would have to disagree with you here, in that ME was meant to be a mythology for Britain and Europe so any comparisons would have to be European.
Also there are many other cultures that lived in harmony with nature so the native americans aren't the only ones in that respect.
