And what about the dragons, hiding their treasures in the caves = pockets of the earth? Did they substitute riches for fertility? They did, after all, die out!
I would like to add the following discussion link for your perusal: What's With this Always Going Underground Sharku plainly exposes the symbolism as sexual, though he tries to disguise his explanation as irony... Furthermore I highly recommend that classic discussion of the ring's female symbolism, my all-time favorite thread: The One Ring? It is nice to know that those discussion days have not ended irrevocably! PS edit: Is my usage of the word 'disguise' in my above comment symbolic as well?
