Elven-Maiden has just left Hobbiton.
Pipe bit of a mix-up

I wasn't very clear in the opening of my thread, so I'll re-phrase it now.

Each novel in the LotR trilogy is actually two books.

The Fellowship of the Ring
1) Introduces the story and some characters.
2) The quest begins, and we've met the rest of the heros.

The Two Towers
3) The fellowship is broken, and it follows Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Merry and Pippin
4) Set in the same time frame as book 3 but it follows Frodo and Sam.

The Return of the King
5) Follows Aragorn, Gandalf and friends.
6) Follows Frodo, Sam, Gollum and enemies, also concludes the novel.

Well, I love all parts of LotR so it's difficult to chose one...
but my two faves are the first and the 5th book.
The first because of the great describtion of the landscape and the meeting with strider. For the 5th I don't have a real reason it's just the one I enjoy reading most.

i know you mean book in the trilogy, but the book that is often over looked is The Hobbit. that is my favorite book. its written on a much less serious scale and it is funnier. it has a lot of the same detail about the landscape and it is just a wonderful book. it gives the background to LotR.

as for book in the trilogy, i must say that i like book 5. it shows the rise of the different people. here you see Aragorn accept his position as king when he goes into the Paths of the Dead. you also see a side of Merry and Pippin that you didnt expect. they become brave warriors and doo all they can to help. you see Theoden returned to himself and ruler of Rohan. you see Gandalf and his true power as he fights the nazgul. and yes the incrdible battle scenes help a lot and make things that much better.
