When you`re in the store looking for a birthday present for you little brother, and your mom asks how much something costs. You bend over to look and and reply, "Twelve ninety-six." And then with a sly grin add, "Very good year! Almost as old as I am!" Yes, my parents think I`m insane.

Heh heh... must try that.

Incidentally, the "bottles of the Old Winyards" would not be almost as old as Bilbo, were they from 1296, seeing as Bilbo was born in 2890... they'd be around 1594 years older than Bilbo...

When I realized that it irritated me an obscene amount... I became unreasonably irate and began complaining to everyone within earshot that Peter Jackson had failed me. Fortunately, those within earshot were both LotR fans and no strangers to my madness, so I was not met with too much derision.

Not wishing to be nitpicky, but perhaps Bilbo saying 'Almost as old as I am' is a form of self derision, as old people often say things like 'Two thousand years ago, when I was at school...' and stuff like that. At least that's what I assumed when I heard it, realised it was wrong, then thought about it for a bit...

Still that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

Encaitare, you're forgetting to subtract 1600 from the Third Age year to adapt it to Shire Reckoning. Bilbo was born 1290 S.R., which would be 2890 Third Age; the Old Winyards was actually only six years younger than he was.

Why measure the wine's age with the different scale though?

Perhaps because it did not originate from the Shire? I am not sure that Hobbits were really into viticulture. With Bilbo's connections, I would suspect that it came from Dorwinion via Lake-Town. Thus it would not be labelled according to the Shire Reckoning.

Tolkien

You prove you are truly obsessed with LotR when:
someone asks you what your Evenstar Pendant is, and then they add "Oh, must be something from that Ring movie."

While playing a game in science class, my teacher (who is a fan of the movies) asked about 10 LotR questions. I ran to the marker board and answered all of the questions correctly, allowing the girls team to win. The boys don`t let him ask LotR questions anymore.

I`d like to add that yesterday, I went to the orthodontist and chose dark blue and silver rubber bands because they reminded me of Gondor.

I don't need anyone or anything to tell me quite how obsessed I am , but last week somebody came from the one of the more distant eyries of my office specifically to ask me a question about Elrond. Bearing in mind that the place puts Gormenghast to shame, they must have heard some hair raising tales of my obsession to make the journey.
