I don't think the Fëanor would have matured in the same way that Maedhros did. I think he was so consumed with himself and his own desires (getting the Silmarils) that he would drive a wedge into any possible alliance between his people and others so that there would be no alliance. And withou an alliance, the free people of middle earth would fail in any attempt to overthrow morgoth. Not that there was ever much hope anyway.
