Silmaril Where's Eowyn?

I know there's been discussions similar to this before in regards to the movies, but I'm just wondering, overall, do you think that Eowyn is constantly overlooked when it comes to the media? This was brought up by a recent casting article I read about the LOTR Musical in Toronto. Throughout the article they talk about who is playing what part, and they even mention Eomer and Elrond, but there is no mention of Eowyn! They talk of Arwen, Galadriel, and even Rosie... but where's Eowyn? I don't know if this is just due to the fact that the news reporter overlooked her because she was not played by a "famous" actor in the movies, or if they've actually had the gaul to downsize or even eliminate her role in the musical. I just can't fathom, though, how they could be doing that. I think I may try to write the company in regards to this, because she is too important of a character to be downsized or cut. Do you not agree? Am I the only one who sees the extreme validaty of this character. I'm really starting to worry about this production now.
You could see it with the movies as well. Most promotional stuff did not feature her character at all. It was all about Arwen and Galadriel because of who played them. How can the female with the largest written part in the book be constantly overlooked so much?

Bizarre!!!!

I know nothing of this subject beyond what you have just said, but I'll admit to being amazed. Eowyn has, after all, one of the most media-friendly roles in the story, being a fighting female, young, beautiful, and blonde. To downplay her is... shocking!

Now, personally, I like Elrond over Eowyn, any day. And I'm glad to see Eomer get some of the spotlight he deserves. But this is... odd.

If you're right in your perceptions, this is VERY confusing...

Silmaril

How dare they!!!

But we have to admit that in today's society, people are much more interested in out-of-this-world characters, like Arwen and Galadriel who are Elves. Eowyn, though no doubt the most admirable female character in the movies, mirrors pretty much the woman of the present: strong-willed and a fighter. Beautiful though she is, I think the ordinary book-ignorant would prefer to see the beauty of the Elves.

Hmph. Their loss.

I mean, with all the females in the book...

It seems very strange to me. She is one of the most interesting characters in the entire story.

It does seem strange. She is a strong female character and this is quite a popular theme in things these days. Just look at shows like Buffy or books by the likes of people such as Tamora Pierce. It almost seems to alienate part of an audience, but then it could just be an honest mistake.

I think in regard to Eowyn's 'marketing' in the films, she may have received less publicity due to the machinations of agents. Firstly, Liv Tyler and Cate Blanchett are much bigger stars than Miranda Otto, so their agents would have carried more muscle in getting their clients better publicity. And I can imagine that Miranda Otto's agent may not have been as powerful as the agents of Liv and Cate. Certainly the character of Eowyn is very marketable, so I think that may be the answer in regard to the films?

This does seem a bit odd. I would doubt (although I admit I don't know) that the role of Eowyn would be scrapped in the Musical. I think it more as the author of the article just looked passed her.

I read and write a lot of reviews on IMDB and when mentioning characters only the most stand-out or important ones usually get mentioned. Meaning a lot of people get overlooked, some important roles aren't even mentioned.

Usually the main hero/heroine and the villain are talked about. Other supporting roles are briefly mentioned (if at all). I think this is what happened in the case with Eowyn, it would be strangely odd if they completely scrapped her in the musical.

Just as a thought is it possible that they haven't cast her yet?

I don't know that Eowyn has been overlooked the whole way through; I bought a fantasy movie magazine a while ago that had a really great 3 or 4 page article all about her.
