How come Rivendell was never discovered by Sauron?

Hi all,

I belive in UT like ^ said that Sauron was planning to attack Elrond that is why Gandalf undertook the quest with Bilbo and the gang.

Gandalfs purpose was that the Dwarves should retake thier city and then the way to Elrond would be blocked.
