I'm getting a bit inrigued to know what you people are talking about. Must be a Brit thing... don't remember seeing anything over here in the States, though since I've stopped working at the bookstore and gone on to be a (hard working) university student, my scope of entertainment happenings is small. TT opening night was the last time I've been to a movie, and I can't remember the last time I watched TV without the show being something my roomate picked out. What's the name of the magazine in question? Post a link and I'll check it out if it's got an online version (or at least a place with a summary). Call it morbid curiousity. I'm completely with you on the commercial aspect. Though currently residing in the country that gave capitalism it's capital "C", it still makes me ill when I saw ads (thankfully past-tense, mostly it was FoTR-related) for mugs being sold at Burger King with the likenesses of Undomiel and the Hobbit trio. Probably soon there will be similar things with Treebeard and Eowyn.
