Tolkien had said that writing the LOTR and inventing the Middle Earth made him feel like he was the God, but he was merely interpreting God's work, there still had to be God to create all that. I don't really know what I believe in, but Tolkien surely read his Bible examining it thoroughly. Although, there are other elements basen on Old German and Norse mythology.
