Well, I've read Hobbit, LotR, Silmarillion, UT, and the first 5 of the histories, and, as a book, The Silmarillion is my favorite. UT is pretty good, but can't hold up on it's own (considering it's a collection of unrelated "short" stories). Of course, all of them are quite excellent, although the Histories can be pretty confusing. Remember not to read through UT or the Histories like stories; you'll become more confused than an orc stuck with 2 hobbits....
