We, as far as I know, don't see anything that would indicate that Sam did not put on the Ring, but we do see Merry receiving his sword (requiring sharpening in Rohan) from Aragorn.

Good point. But I reckon that the 'sword' Merry used was in fact a dagger he got from Galadriel. And she said that it was of Numenorean make didn't she? Just like the one from the Barrow perhaps.......
