I'm confused...
thing makes it sound it's not alive, but slain clearly shows the contrary

or maybe it should only show that these 2 things are identical...I really don't know what to understand from this

No That is not it Might....You are kinda on the right trail that they are the same, in a way. And yes the things are alive.

but if they both are things it would also mean they have something in common
but since there are so many examples of Men killing Men or Elves killing Elves this can't be so easy

it made me think that "thing" might suggest they are animals...so I first thought of the Witch-king's fell beast and Snowmane
