The book wasn't a comedy but it had its comic moments like that gossipy old Gondorian lass and "There ain't no eaves at Bag End and that's a fact."
 I think the film was right to have some comic relief and I found the Gimli's talk of bearded Dwarven women humorous or maybe that's just me
