Check out this painting by Terbush called "To Stand In The Shadow of God". Its as close as I could ever imagine anyone painting the unspoiled Middle-earth before anyone else arrived there. Some of his landscapes are just amazing for the epic presentation and multi-light sources which give it a feel of other worldlyness.

It would be the light, the kind of illumination, as well as the intensity of the colours, in both davem's and StW's artists, which remind you both of Middle-earth?
Yes, its all those things plus the epic nature of the landscapes.
