Before the ruin of Beleriand, definitely Gondolin! I love the stories about Gondolin the best in the Sil, wish Tolkien had written more of them.

After, I would pick Rivendell. Rivendell is my favorite Middle-earth place. But the Grey Havens would probably be nice, too, so close to the sea. I wish we knew more about that place, too.

I think i need to read the Silmarillion, so far it sounds like it is a very good book. Then again, what Tolkien book isnt good? (talking about his ME related ones. Dont know a clue about the others) lol.

Pre-ruin: I'd have to go with the early days of Khazad-dum. Hard workin', hard drinkin' days, belting out great songs in a deep baratone loud enough to shake the very rocks! Making weapons, armor and jewelery both beautiful and wicked. Ah! Now that's the life!

Post-ruin: After all those years indoors, it's time to get some fresh air. I'd build a house right next door to Tom Bombadil (I wouldn't want to cramp his style.

I think out of all the places before the ruin and after I would have to go with the Shire. I could really get used to living there.
Everything is so green and beautiful there. Though it would have been cool to live in some of those early Elvish locals like Menegroth and Tirion.
