I don't have any obsessed LOtr friends, but I have a few who have more than just a passing interest in them. Don't insult Megan's taste in books. Perhaps she won't mind your taste in LOTR, if you try not to mind hers. But it sounds to me like you could use a slight tune-down when it comes to LOTR anyway...just some of my bizzare thoughts.
