I know you said no movies, but this reminded me of what I read in an article or book (read so much can't remember where).
The casting director and assts. constantly needed extras for the movies that even when they would walk the streets they point to people.....hobbit...elf....uruk-hai....dwarf...etc.
So I kind of do that myself when I'm bored in line.
