Although you are probably just going to have to agree to disagree, you might try this....

Is your friend into any fantasy stories, movies, games, ect? If so, you might be able to find some good comparisons between the two - i.e. "Well, if you like that, then you might like this too."
Perhaps showing your friend some similarities between things they already like and LOTR will open them up to the idea of checking it out! [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]
