Uhm, Orlandosumthin', The reason why the big final battle was won by the goodies, is because Saurons' power was destroyed. He was actually winning the fight, but after his demise the Orcs were short work. That's quite a difference! And for Sauron himself, the whole tower Barad Dur crumbled.
