I live in Lancashire and Tolkien is meant to have taken a lot of the landscape from round here and used it in his books. I can see why, on an autumn day (when its not raining) its just lovely! I think the Shire is a mixture of a lot of English counties and insteaf of choosing a specific name, it is just the Shire- it could be anywhere in Britain.

I think you can also relate Britian more to Middle Earth than America to Middle Earth (or is that to be expected?). Also, the landscape is similar to that in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Again, is this to be expected, especially as C.S. Lewis and him were friends?
