Re: Favorite character

I am Lothwen btw, had to change my name for an EQ board

You cannot fault Beren for doing nothing in the Hall of Morgoth, how would you fare if you came upon the thing that was worse than your worst nightmare and like unto hell? I can tell you that I would probably paralized and I don't even think I could go in

After thinking about it I've decided that I'm now unable to pick a favorite character, I love each and every one(excluding the baddies ). Each has something wonderful and beautiful about them, some thing wonderful in them. Merry and Pippens friendship and joy , the Valars love and care for those that turned away from them, Finrods loyalty, even he who betrayed Beren's people because he did because he thought the person he loved most was endanger and I could go on for nearly ever character in ME and out of it

Re: Favorite character

My favorite is Aragorn. I guess I'm not that surprised that a number of ppl chose Feanor; after all, this site is named after a place inhabited by evil wights, and the niccknames given to posters at various levels of participation are not names of heroes, but of dead or undead spirits. Barrowdowns is clearly Satanic, and my interest in it is troubling.

Re: Favorite character

I can never decide on a favourite character. I think it depends on lots of things, and I'm always changing my mind.

Who would I want on my side if I were in trouble? Aragorn or Gandalf definitely. Bravery, strength, loyalty, honour... lots to admire and respect there.

Who would I want to spent time in the pub with? Merry and Pippen, certainly, for their humour, cameraderie and good company. Maybe also Bilbo, who could tell wonderful tales.

Who do I care about the most? Definitely Sam, who has loads of qualities, as well as a vulnerability which makes everyone want to befriend him. Sam always needs other people, and his emotions and self-doubt make him easier to identify with, as well as very appealing.

Re: Favorite character

O 819, I understand your concerns , to them I will reply- On several other boards I have visited some of them having names which were much 'lighter' shall we say the tone and discourse was far darker. Here at the downs w/ very few exceptions [ of the thtreads I see anyway] the conversations tend to a high level and the tone between those posting is warm.

so I don't think satanic is really an apt description.

Lindil is oft found on posting on the Silmarillion Project at the Barrowdowns and working on a new Elven/Christian discussion boardOsanwe-Kenta 'The dwindling Men of the West would often sit up late into the night, and awaken early before dawn- exchanging lore and wisdom such as they possessed , so that they should not fall back into the mean and low estate of those , who never knew or more sadly still, had indeed rebelled against the Light.'

Re: Satanic

Angmaric, maybe..... Sauronic, perhaps.... but satanic? There was no satan in Middle-earth, so he couldn't have been responsible for any of its evilness, inluding animated skeletons and wights.

But since its all fictional, its plain to everyone that the forum (and site) theme is simply a creative device used to set it apart (and above, not below) other similar endeavors.

Favorite character & favorite board

My favorite character is Frodo (which should be rather obvious from my name) because even though he was "just" a hobbit, he chose to do something amazingly heroic and grew enough in the process to understand the depth of Saruman's fall. And he must have been a pretty terrific guy because Sam, Merry and Pippin all chose to face incredible evil because they were his friends.

Regarding the theme of this board, I too was initially a put off (indeed creeped out) when I saw the "newly deceased" under my name. However, I've never found any board on any subject where the posts are also always intelligent and articulate and exchanges are civil and thoughtful -- even where there is disagreement. Maybe it's because seeing yourself listed as "newly deceased" subconsciously gives a bit of perspective....

My fav. character is Gandalf. But, not because of what he is or what he can do, but what he is like. Gandalf and I have much in common. (need not mention here) and he seems like a guy that i would want to hang with.

Re:I gotta lotta favorites

I guess my favorite is Sam,I mean he's simple and all he knows is that he's goin with Frodo and he's gonna stay with Frodo,he does'nt know much of the history of the Ring and what he heard he heard when he eavesdropped in on Frodo and Gandalf and he did'nt understand all of it, and his truthfull loyalty makes you relize he's not just a servant but a friend someone to admire and love-he's also a good cook*winking*-.Frodo's my second favorite,he knows what the Ring can do to him,but he bears it because all that he loves is in danger of being destroyed. As a fact I like all of the hobbits Merry and Pippin are kind loving funny wise senseble strange and brave,Bilbo started the mess but I like him anyway cause he writes beautifull poems I like the whole Fellowship especially Legolas he has a bow and all and can climb trees with out a ladder.I think that Beren and Luthien are amazing charecters the risk every thing for their love, Turin is brave-but his storyis sooooo deppressing-and I admire the geniuss of Feanor or whoever made the Sillmarillions.

Fav Charactor

this is a real hard one to answer as no author has ever produced so many great characters as J.R.R.T. and howverer many i list here there will always be others than i dont or even forget to mention. there were many wonderfull characters in the 2nd and 3rd ages but as i am most fond of the 1st age i will chose my charcter from there. Maedhros was a great character. although not as skilled as his father his character shows what feanor perhaps should have been. despite being subject and eventually twisted by the Oath of feanor. he prevented the Noldor destroying each other over soon by showing diplomacy in handing over the lordship of the Noldor to the house of Fingolfin and moving his house to east Beleriand thus keeping his over zealous family(Maglor not included)from causing even more strife than they still managed to kindle. without the oath Maedhros would made a wonderfull high king being both Diplomatic and just. I also believe that Maedhros was nearly if not as valient as the line of Fingolfin and the term "disspossed" applies more to Maedhros alone than the house of Feanor in general. However twisted by the oathof father much the same way Saruman was twisted by the One Ring ages later. Maedhros eventually resorted to evil deads to fufill his oath therefore he cannot go down a my favourite character so Maehros stand at number 3 in my personal favs.

Beleg Cuthalion (the Strongbow). What a magnificient person Beleg was, He was a mighty elf and warrior and the greatest at woodcraft the world has ever seen. He was also totally unpompus and ceromonial which the Eldar tended to be. However his devotian and great plutonic love for Turin was beyond belief. Beleg was great amoung the Eldar but he gave all to make sure a mortal man cheated his cure. Alas Beleg failed but he gave up his life. albeit inadvertanly trying. Therefore Beleg stands at number 2 in my favs.

now to number 1. he is in fact the very person that Beleg was so devoted to. Turin Turambar. Although a mortal man Turin imho was the greatest warrior of all time and i even believe that even the likes of Fingolfin would have fallen to him in a duel. But what really makes Turin great is the fact that he always managed to show two fingers to Morgoth desptie the dreadfull curse put on him and his family and Turin also slayed arguably Morgoth's greatest weapon Glaurung the dragon. Now Turin was by no means flawless. he was impulsive. over emmotional rash in judgement as he was anger and did deeds that if he had thought about would never have happened. However the good points far outweigh the bad and Turin is without doubt my No1 of J.R.R.T's characters

Favorite Character

My favorite character has to be Curufin. I mean c'mon... he was sweet, kind, caring, gentle and (and I'm lying through my teeth) and of course, my son :-).
No, actually, I prefer my brother's son to any of my own. Fingon was one great elf. And, through the effort of his loins produced a greater one, Gil-Galad! I love Gil-Galad, he was the noblest of the line of Finwë and the most selfless. Through his efforts, the Last Alliance was forged, and Sauron's dominion in Middle-Earth overthrown for a long age. At the loss of his own life, and that of many others of his people, he saw through his quest, and the great evil passed from the land.

well said feanor

Gil-Galad and Fingon sure were mighty and rightly deserve to be named amoung the very greatest.

As i named my top 3 above i said that i may miss out some characters, another of my nominations would be Finrod Felegund for much the same reason as you mentioned Gil-Galad.

If I must choose a favorite character out of ALL of the work written by Tolkien when I must say that my award would go to Samwise. After all, I am his daughter. (instert laugh here)

Tell the truth Red. You just like Elrond becuase he operates the Last Homely Still east of the Blessed Realm. Cordial of Imladris indeed!! That stuff will make you go blind!!
Bootlegger Elrond is nothing but a rum-runner operating over the Misty Mountains. Now the truth is out and we know the real reason why the pass over the mountains has stayed open for the last few thousand years.

Re: Who is your favortie character in Tolkiens work?

Like my feelings for Tom Bombadil, my favorite character has changed over time.
Bilbo was the first and after reading the other books he still has a unique place in my heart. Likewise Gandalf, as his image in my mind has matured as did his role in ME. LoTR gave me Frodo and Sam, and with Elrond the return of a dear favorite who always seems to be onstage not nearly enough.
Galadriel, Gimli, Thorin, and Thrain not forgotten, languishing in his cell all alone.
From the greatest to the least.
Eol in his dark woods, brooding on an imagined slight. (Get those Noldor off MY lands!)
The Silmarillion gave me a cast of thousands. Finrod Felagund, perhaps the greatest heart of all. If anyone can find a more true friend to choose, I can't think of one.

It boils down to this.

If I am not near the Middle Earth character I love,
why then I love the character I am near !!

Bilbo has been and most likely always will be my favorite character. To read The Hobbit and know what he is thinking every second is so interesting. He is probably one of the nicest people on the ME too.

Fingolfin

Fingolfin takes my vote, he was the most valiant of all the elven-kings. he was the only one that dared to face Morgoth in single combat, though he had a very cruel death (under the foot of Morgoth) i think he should be Fingolfin The Valiant not Fingon.

Gandalf has always been my favorite. He's so wise and so powerful. I don't know if I like him as grey or white better. Grey seemed more wise, but white seemed more powerful. I realize they are the same person, but they act differently.

Heh, I've already stated my opinion on this thread, but under a different name. Thanks for bringing up old memories Snowdog! It's always nice to see the past.

I have my favorite characters narrowed down to two: Frodo and Aragorn. Frodo because the stories were mainly about him the hobbit who had to save the world in a sense. And also because of the changes his character went through, from a scruffy ranger to a king! Frodo also went through changes as well, but his were more sad, due to his use of the ring, and all the horror he had to endure.

Tolkien

The Witch King of Angmar is the best.
Why do you think my friends call me the Witch King? I also like the Balrog is also one of my favorites.
