OK, back to the topic at hand. I read LOTR and the Hobbit in four days, though I really read the Hobbit in two or three hours, and RotK in three or four. The other two were read amongst various activities throughout the weekend. If I had the chance again I could probably read the whole thing in two days. (mm, project for next summer's road trip) The Silmarillion took me a couple of months(like 4 or 5) because I stopped halfway through due to the "there is so much going on I can't keep half of it straight!" syndrome. I finished the other half in less than a week.
Now it takes me a long time to finish the books, I started the Fellowship at the end of may, and I am still not done with TTT!

If you look way back to the first page, you'll see an entry by someone named "hegemonmatt". That is, indeed, me.

I forgot to mention I read a book prior to reading the trilogy called "Photoreading" which I then tested out on LotR. It involves certain techniques that allow you to read most (or, if you're really good, all) of a page in about 5 seconds, and still remember everything on it. That's why I was able to read it so fast. However, it puts a lot of stress on the mind and eyes, so I don't do that unless it's for cramming.

I've always wanted to try one of those programs. Somehow, until now, I've never really believed that they worked.

Anyway, my best time for LotR is 3 weeks at the age of 10. For the Hobbit it is one day at the age of 7.

I am not a speed reader, so the best I've ever done is read about a chapter a day, which is a little over two months. That's how long it takes me every year... a little over two months. Which makes it quite a commitment to read it every year. I wouldn't say I'm a slow reader, but I like to take everything in, especially in LOTR. I take time to enjoy it, usually reading the poems silently or singing them in my head, then singing them out loud. Sometimes in the middle of a book I'll just stop and think about it. I like to be able to feel like I've been there and seen it all, like I've travelled wiht these characters and spoken with them and helped them along the way. I take my time to enjoy it, and if I miss anything I go back and read the whole paragraph again. So I can read fairly fast, but I don't speed read.

My usual time is about two days for the trilogy and prequels.

Well, I've read the whole trilogy in about the span of half a day... I tend to read fast, but I find that if it's a good book, I'm not seeing how fast I can skim through it, I just can't put it down. I absorb everything and I just can't wait to get to see what happens next.. although, when reading LoTR, I sometimes forget to sleep, or eat, or breathe, all I know is to keep on reading..
