He could, but last time I watched the movies Elrond was still supposed to be a good guy. For all the stupid mess PJ made of Elrond's character, at least he didn't turn him into a murderer.

I know. It bugged me how they did Elrond too even before i even read the books i got the wrong impression of him.

Isildur was closer to the exit, in reverse of Sam and Frodo. Therefore, Elrond would have had to chase him, and Isildur would have had plenty of time to get away.
Exit <---------------> Isildur <-----------------------> Elrond Kinda pointless attempting to force him. More like, shoot him then toss him in. That could have worked.
