Trick question- Melkor was afraid of Ungoliant, but it wasn't due to arachnophobia, but rather podophobia, an irrational fear of feet. And seeing as Ungoliant had 8 of them, it's no surprise she upset his psyche mightily.

A: Because when they tried to ride them over Mordor's rocky terrain the Beasts Fell down. Q: How many Butterbur's does it take to screw in a lightbulb in Bree?

Who was the first person to sail across the Belegaer?
Wrong Way Telmemorr, who was actually trying to help his big bro when he heard Ungoliant putting the squeeze on him over the Silmarils. After repeatedly rescuing him when his ship kept floundering Ulmo got him a job making sure the Helcaraxe ice flows were kept nice and dangerous. (Telmemorr was rather a disappointment to the evil Ainur).  How did Thranduil make sure all his imported Dorthonion wine was organic and all egg laying chickens raised cage free?
