Agh, apologies for killing this thread. Here, I will resurrect it for us:

Morgoth's Ring states: "He [Sauron] still had the relics of positive purposes, that descended from the good of the nature in which he began..."

The paragraph goes on to explain what this virtuous quality is...which is the answer to my trivia question.
