First of all, not all of the items in the list are quotes. They are just clues (riddles sorta) that will give you a list of 'Things' (not 'Persons, Beasts and Monsters' or 'Places').

If I actually named the Things, I think you would have the answer immediately. All are Things from The Lord of the Rings. And they have one Thing in common.

I think I should edit the list slightly:

one of the Three
the livery of the guards of the Court of the Fountain
Speak, friend and enter.
The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hopes end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee.
"In his time the City was made more fair than it had ever been, even in the days of its first glory; and it was filled with trees and with fountains, and its gates were ------- -- ------- ..."
'Here's a pretty hobbit-skin to wrap an elven-princeling in.'
