Whats up with him. He is just a man, I have read, but with the powers to change. Where does this come from...is the shape-shifting mentioned at anytime in the LotR or the silm, or any of the books? He is also interesting to me, like TOm. He plays a major role in the book (turned the tide of the battle of 5 armies) but he is not very much explored.

I've never really thought about this, but now that you mention it, you're right. Gandalf said that he thinks Beorn came from the Misty Mountains. Does this mean anything?

I think Beorn is rather inconsistent with Middle-earth as it exists in LOTR and the Silm.. To me, he is one of several `misfits` to be found in the Hobbit, rather like the rock-throwing giants.

Good point but Id think that such a character that turned the tide in a huge battle and had a whole chapter(S) devouted to him, he would be more that a mistake. Something to be taken out if it could be redone.

I just re-read this part also and in its origins of beorn Gandalf speculates two things, a man from the hills, that is a shape shifter. Or a great bear evolved into a shapeshifter. It also mentions a that he was here before the giants came from the west (valar, and the last war on melkor?) or maybe he was refereing to the stone-giants? I feel his purpose was to kill orcs, and thats it. At somepoint he states that if the orcs were gone his job would be done. I find it hard to believe that he is a man. Because all men are doomed to die, where as say he was part nurmorean(sp?) and he lived say 500. It still doesn't fit the context or the feeling i get of his age. The bear description might be true because bears aren't under any fate, they were just a creation. Their age or powers were set by their creators (yavanna?) Maybe beorn was her way to combat or do her part to save the beuty of middle earth?

His people, the beornings were mentioned, when the company was given lembas. Gilmi said it looked as good as the bread from the beornings

I think Beorn, was an idea that JRRT had for the Hobbit, but he didn't really fit in for the LotR, so he dropped the whole Beorn idea. But to make it look like he meant to do it, he mentions the Beornings, just to keep all the Beorn fans out there happy!! (all 4 of you)

The Beorning were ruled by the sons of Beorn. They are mentioned in The Hobbit as well.

His son was in charge by that time. His people were still there, though. But I think he was the only one who could shapeshift(not sure of that).

I don't think that the Beorn idea is dropped from the LotR. He was just given a &quot;new form&quot;, a character very similar to him: Tom Bombadil.

If in the LOTR Beorn's sons were ruling, what happened to the old man. Surely a character like him cannot simply 'die'? Or can he ?

Yes, I am afraid that the old bloke died before LotR. But let us not mourn, and instead be glad for the inspiration he gave us! He lived a full life, dying in his fith century, and in his time achieving many grerat things.

I think that Beorn could have possibly been distantly related to Beren and therefore he would have possibly had the same blood and power to shape shift flowing through his veins that beren did.

There are tons of Werewolves in the Silmarillion,Sauron is Lord of them in fact,so you just have to think of Beorn as a Werebear and that pretty much solves that. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]

It seems that Beorn is either descendant of some Beorian men who settled close ot the Anduin during the great journey, after they left the Sea of Rhun, or a descendant of a Northman who stayed in Rhovanion. He cannot be a descendant of Beren himself, though he can be a descendant of Beor, or one of Beor's cousins, though, he would be his descendant of his hundreth line ,or some very high figure.
