1) I slew the Valiant.

Gil-Galad
09-17-2003, 03:39 PM
Gothmog who killed Fingon the "Valiant"

Arestevana
09-19-2003, 05:55 AM
Yeah. Wow, that lasted a whole eight minutes. smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

The Nazgul?

Beren87
09-22-2003, 07:29 PM
Just to clear up a matter from above

Why metaphoricly? Exposed to a lot of black breath

The "breath" wasn't literal, it was simply a term for their influence, not their actual breath.

Estanesse
09-23-2003, 05:15 AM
Is it Glaurung

He was the main reason that the siege of Angband broke ( Dagor Bragollach)
The noldor doubted they could ever win
Glaurung came from Angband

The Saucepan Man
09-26-2003, 05:32 PM
Is it Grond, the battering-ram used to break down the Gate of Minas Tirith?

Gil-Galad
09-27-2003, 11:40 AM
can you explain why? remember for most trivias you haev to explain!

[ September 27, 2003: Message edited by: Gil-Galad ]

The Saucepan Man
09-28-2003, 05:11 PM
Yes, thank you Gil-Galad for reminding me of the rules. smilies/wink.gif

can you explain why?

No. Not really. I just got it from the clues "breaker of the strong" and "Gates". Grond broke the strong gate of Minas Tirith.

If indeed Grond is the answer and anyone can provide a better explanation, I am happy to concede the thread to them. smilies/smile.gif

Gil-Galad
09-29-2003, 04:14 PM
who fixed the gates and where did they coem from!

The Saucepan Man
09-29-2003, 04:44 PM
Wasn't it the Dwarves of Gimli's realm at Aglarond? And I think that the new Gate was made of mithril.

Gil-Galad
09-30-2003, 05:06 PM
well thast close enough so it is yoru turn to go

The Saucepan Man
09-30-2003, 06:11 PM
And just which part was not spot on? smilies/wink.gif

The next question:

Who fought under a black serpent in a scarlet sky?

Niluial
10-01-2003, 02:21 AM
Does the black serpent have a name? Or is it just called the Black Serpent?

Was it Fram, son of Frumgar (ok its probably wrong seeing that he slaughtered Scatha the Worm… a dragon lol)

Telchar
10-01-2003, 05:12 AM
The Haradrim

The Saucepan Man
10-01-2003, 06:33 AM
Telchar, I believe that I am entitled to request an explanation after being given such a hard time by Gil-Galad about it. smilies/wink.gif

Telchar
10-01-2003, 07:27 AM
From Chapter 61, The Battle of the Pelennor Fields

Southward beyond the road lay the main force of the Haradrim, and there their horsemen were gathered about the standard of their chieftain. And he looked out, and in the growing light he saw the banner of the king, and that it was far ahead of the battle with few men about it. Then he was filled with a red wrath and shouted aloud, and displaying his standard, black serpent upon scarlet, he came against the white horse and the green with great press of men; and the drawing of the scimitars of the Southrons was like a glitter of stars.

Good enough 4 U ??? smilies/wink.gif

Gil-Galad
10-01-2003, 07:46 AM
I honestly thought it was one of the Rohirrim, like Eomer or Eowyn or Theoden when he was strcuk down by Er-Murazor

The Saucepan Man
10-01-2003, 11:08 AM
Good enough 4 U ???

It surely is. Please proceed. smilies/smile.gif

Telchar
10-01-2003, 04:00 PM
Thanks. Okay this must be my favorite bad guy question, it has been asked before, long ago, but Im going to ask it again smilies/evil.gif

After taking Ost-in-Edhil and destroying the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, Sauron continued his conquest of Eregion, but under which banner?

Finwe
10-01-2003, 09:01 PM
He used the body of Celebrimbor, shot full of Orc arrows and strung up on a pole, as his banner.

*shudders and runs off to vomit convulsively*

No one should do that to an Elf! Especially a Fëanorion!

Telchar
10-02-2003, 01:16 AM
Yeah it's pretty evil smilies/evil.gif - please go on Finwe

Finwe
10-02-2003, 04:07 PM
All right. Here goes:

Goes swish in the night,
Scarer of littles,
Goes clump in the night,
Scarer of speechless,
Unafraid of war,
Afraid of our bathtub,
Afraid of our stove,
Afraid of our mum.

Telchar
10-03-2003, 01:53 AM
Im guessing: The lord of the Nazgul? ... he is not that good with water, fire and women smilies/rolleyes.gif

Finwe
10-04-2003, 12:17 PM
Yes indeed, you are right.

Telchar
10-05-2003, 10:50 AM
In what land did the Variags dwell?

Galahat
10-05-2003, 01:28 PM
This is my first time posting, go easy on me smilies/smile.gif
I believe it's Khand, a land lying somewhere beyond (east of) Mordor...

Telchar
10-05-2003, 04:29 PM
Khand was the answer I was looking for Galahat, that earns you the right to ask the next question, and btw, welcome to the Downs smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif

Galahat
10-07-2003, 09:10 AM
Thanks! Telchar smilies/smile.gif

Well, here goes nothing:

I am Child of both darkness and light.
At first I prefered the light in me, but I betrayed it, when I was confronted with darkness itself.

I hope that's not too easy..or too flawed for that matter smilies/smile.gif

Gil-Galad
10-07-2003, 06:35 PM
Maeglin, he is the son of Eol and Turgons sister(forgot name) and went to Gondolin without fathers permisson and confronted by Morgoth!!!

Galahat
10-07-2003, 07:30 PM
That is correct!
Proceed smilies/smile.gif

Gil-Galad
10-08-2003, 04:38 PM
I have lead a host, yet i didn't
I have slain many kings, yet i didn't
I have protected the greatest, yet i didn't
I have died in the grand city, yet i didn't

Which Bad guy am I?

(very hard! only for expert/intermedite Tolkien fans only!)

Gothmog?

Gil-Galad
10-09-2003, 03:34 PM
state which one

Nilpaurion Felagund
10-11-2003, 12:33 AM
Gothmog the Lieutenant of the Balrogs?

Estanesse
10-11-2003, 04:20 AM
Or is it Gothmog lord of Morgul smilies/biggrin.gif

Gothmog Lieutenant of the Balrogs killed at least two kings, Feanor and Turgon and Gothmog lord of Morgul killed none.
Gothmog lieutenant of the balrogs protected Morgoth, Gothmog lord of Morgul protected Sauron who was great but not the Greatest.
The lieutenant of the Balrogs was killed in Gondolin. The lord of Morgul was killed, I think some were at the Battle of the Pelennor fields.

Finwe
10-11-2003, 08:34 AM
Gothmog Lord of Balrogs.

Gil-Galad
10-11-2003, 10:58 AM
Esta is right, it was Gothmog, Leitenit of Morgul and Gothmog killed 3 kings, Fingon, Feanor and Turgon. it is your turn

Gwaihir the Windlord
10-12-2003, 01:56 AM
So... why 'didn't' he kill the three kings, Gil-Galad?

Gil-Galad
10-12-2003, 08:07 AM
becasue there were 2 Gothmogs mentioned, one being the Balrog and other being the LT of Minas Morgul, the one from Minas Morgul didn't kill 3 kings but Gothmog the Balrog did

Estanesse
10-13-2003, 01:53 PM
A leader I’m
Strict I was too much
Camp against camp
Big against small
For fear I have no room except one
There I stood high,Proud until the end

Gil-Galad
10-20-2003, 07:29 AM
Uldor the acursed?

Estanesse
10-20-2003, 08:08 AM
Nope
*Hint* he is from the third Age?

Telchar

the person I'm looking for is late third age

Gwaihir the Windlord
10-21-2003, 02:30 AM
Denethor.

Estanesse
10-21-2003, 03:41 AM
right period wrong answer

Telchar
10-21-2003, 05:19 AM
Maybe its Saruman? He fits in pretty good!

Estanesse
10-21-2003, 07:06 AM
He does, but no that’s not the bad guy I’m looking for.

Gil-Galad
10-21-2003, 07:34 AM
Er-Murazor, the Witch-King?

Telchar
10-21-2003, 08:23 AM
who is Er-Murazor?

The Saucepan Man
10-21-2003, 10:48 AM
Surely it's Ugluk. He was certainly a strict leader, although there was infighting (camp against camp and big against small) amongst the Orcs he "led". He fears no-one except Saruman, and he stood and fought when the Rohirrim attacked.

Estanesse
10-21-2003, 12:12 PM
It is almost perfect Sauce, except the bad guy and the part about Saruman.

Hint- take "There I stood high" literal

[ October 21, 2003: Message edited by: Estanesse ]

Gil-Galad
10-21-2003, 12:16 PM
Er-Murazor was the "human" name for the witch-king, before he became a NAzgul

The Saucepan Man
10-21-2003, 12:29 PM
Shagrat then?

Estanesse
10-21-2003, 01:07 PM
Indeed, Shagrat is the bad guy.

There was a fight (the Shagrat camp fought against the Gorbag camp) because Shagrat forbid the other orcs to search (and steal that mithril coat) Frodo. Big against small is the fight between Shagrat and Snaga. Shagrat was pretty fearless, until he saw Sam with the one ring. He ran away like a frightened schoolgirl

Telchar
10-21-2003, 01:20 PM
Hmmm.... I thought that "Er-Murazor" was a name that came from a set of commercial LoTR playingcards which has nothing, what so ever, to do with anything JRR Tolkien wrote...

I plead that the quizroom sticks to what is Written in the books unless anything else is asked for...

A point of view - shared by Telchar...

[ October 21, 2003: Message edited by: Telchar ]

Gil-Galad
10-21-2003, 04:07 PM
I remember reading about Er-Murazor in many tolkien related books, including silmarillion and the appendices

Telchar
10-21-2003, 04:18 PM
ok... smilies/redface.gif

The Saucepan Man
10-21-2003, 08:29 PM
I plead that the quizroom sticks to what is Written in the books unless anything else is asked for...

I agree. And I also plead that side discussions be kept to a minimum on the Quiz threads. smilies/rolleyes.gif

And so to my question:

Which "Bad Guy" was driven mad by internal torment and, in his madness, breached the defences of a well-protected place?

[ October 21, 2003: Message edited by: The Saucepan Man ]

Telchar
10-22-2003, 01:49 AM
That would surely be Carcharoth when he in pain and rage entered Doriath with a burning Silmaril in his belly.

The Saucepan Man
10-22-2003, 07:11 AM
Ah, I knew that I should have tried to be more vague in my wording. You are of course quite right, Telchar. Please continue. smilies/smile.gif

Telchar
10-22-2003, 07:30 AM
This bad guy came as promised and expected, they all had so great hope in him, but he availed little in the end.

Gil-Galad
10-22-2003, 08:20 PM
the witch-King? when he lead the seige on Minas Tirith? he of course failed

Telchar
10-23-2003, 12:16 AM
nope

NightKnight
10-23-2003, 12:46 PM
Ancalagon perhaps?

Telchar
10-23-2003, 04:11 PM
Nope...

Hint: This bad guy was a leader of soldiers

Finwe
10-23-2003, 06:20 PM
Mauhur, who the Uruk-hai were expecting to ambush the Rohirrim, but never came because the Rohirrim found him and his Orcs first?

Telchar
10-24-2003, 01:09 AM
Good Finwe - Mauhur is correct smilies/smile.gif

And he did come, he just never conected with Ugluks troops before he and his company was destroyd by Eomers men. Plase continue

Gil-Galad
11-06-2003, 06:29 PM
The company of fourteen met him, nad killed him
they escaped though, with a prescious cause

who is "him"

Gil-Galad
11-08-2003, 07:50 PM
anyone? i have so many questions on alot of the quiz's in this room and no one is anwsering!

Gil-Galad
11-11-2003, 10:09 AM
Hint: its in the Hobbit

NightKnight
11-11-2003, 12:27 PM
The orc chieftain in the Misty Mountains?

Gil-Galad
11-11-2003, 01:54 PM
nope

Gil-Galad
11-12-2003, 08:52 AM
woah my bad your right, kinda... its the goblin king of goblin town, but i guess you can still go

NightKnight
11-13-2003, 12:21 PM
That was what I meant. Just one thing, they were 15, and not 14 (13 dwarves + Gandalf and Bilbo).

Anyway, who was second in command of Morgul's forces?

Beren87
11-13-2003, 02:05 PM
Khamul?

Telchar

Gothmog!

edhellen heru
11-13-2003, 05:06 PM
souron.

Gil-Galad
11-13-2003, 07:54 PM
Souron? who is Souron?

Well even though Telchar is right, i'll say it more precise
Gothmog, LT of Minas Morgul

edhellen heru
11-13-2003, 08:53 PM

NightKnight
11-14-2003, 04:29 PM
Telchar is right, please continue. smilies/smile.gif

Telchar
11-14-2003, 05:47 PM
I guess it's kinda stupid, but...

... this bad guy is big enough to stand up....

Telchar
11-18-2003, 01:57 PM
Its not so hard actually! smilies/wink.gif

edhellen heru
11-18-2003, 04:16 PM
Balrog?
There are a lot of bad-guys that fit that description.

Telchar
11-18-2003, 04:19 PM
Nope.

Though it is a little cryptic, its actually a very straight forward description of the 'bad guy' name or rather the meaning of his name.

Estanesse
11-20-2003, 03:59 PM
is it Smaug

Telchar
11-20-2003, 04:12 PM
I thought Smaug flew... and didnt 'stand up' - and though I dont think you could call this bad guy a comedian... smilies/biggrin.gif

Nilpaurion Felagund
11-20-2003, 07:48 PM
How about Glaurung? smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif

This guy is really totally super ultra bad!!

Lasgalen
11-22-2003, 02:08 AM
Could it be Melkor?

Gil-Galad
11-22-2003, 12:42 PM
Dragluin?

Telchar
11-22-2003, 04:32 PM
Lasgalen is rigth - but I would love an arguement/explanation ....

Telchar
11-26-2003, 06:01 PM
Cant someone tell me why Melkor is "big enough to stand up!" ???

Gil-Galad
11-26-2003, 08:46 PM
hes a Valar and Valar are gods compared to the others?

Telchar
11-27-2003, 01:32 AM
Nope!

I think we need to continue this thread. Lasgalen had the answer, so he should go on.

What I was looking for was simply the meaning of Melkors name: 'He who arises in Might" - therefore arise=stand up and might=big enough - It was probably too weird... smilies/frown.gif

Estanesse
11-27-2003, 04:54 AM

Lasgalen

Telchar, I guessed Melkor after you said "This guy is really totally super ultra bad!!" because he was the superest ultraest bad guy I could think of.

Telchar
11-28-2003, 03:58 PM
Yes you are right Lasgalen - and I asked for an explanation, which never came. The explanation of/ or show of understanding of the question was essential to me - merely grasping in the dark based on the hints is not enough - sorry. As you can see from My previous posts, you can see that I actually intented you to go on, but Estanesse, with sudden impulse took my breath away - I'll make it up to you ok?

Lasgalen
11-30-2003, 03:54 AM

Thanks Telchar

This one is very easy.
I was a live in the first age but not as long as my father.

Elrond of Rivendell
12-22-2003, 01:56 PM
My guess would be Maeglin who lived 320-510 (I), whereas his father Eol lived until 345 (I) and was born before The First Age.
Greetings,
EfR

Added: Okay, I see now that I probably have misinterpreted the question. "not as long as" ... does this refer to the fact that the son died before the father or to the fact that the father simply lived longer than his son, the latter nevertheless dying after the former?

From which 'Bad Guy' did Beren take the ring of Felagund from, and how did the villian come by the ring?

Lindolirian
02-12-2004, 03:37 PM
He took it from the Orc cheiftain who led the raid against Barahir's band in Dorthonion. The orc had severed the hand of Barahir with the ring of Felagund on it.

My apologies, ma'am. It's the masculine nick that gets me thinking that way. I knew you're a she...

Ar-Pharazôn was the Tar-Palantir's heir, but not his child, and married his daughter, Tar-Miriel, then he incurred the wrath of the Valar, the last Faithful One's masters.

I'm trying to think of a likely bad guy that was chewed out by Gandalf...I expect you would most often find a baddie speechless after a verbal beating from Gandalf... A guess, for sure: Denethor.

Or is he even an actual 'Bad Guy'. Hmmmm...he seems to fit fairly well...

Boromir? I don't know if he technically counts as a bad guy.

The Perky Ent
