I will start off by giving a hint(s) about a bad guy. If you can guess who it is, you can give the next hint and the game continues.
my first hint is this: he was lord and sire of all the werewolves of Agband.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
03-02-2003, 06:57 PM
I was going to say Smeagol, but then I saw the lover part...
Turin? No wait, he wasn't really a bad guy...or was it Brandir?
Tar-Palantir
03-02-2003, 07:37 PM
Nope. This guy was definitely a 'bad guy' but was also a human.
Gil-Galad
03-02-2003, 07:52 PM
then should it not count if its not a bad guy?
The Saucepan Man
03-02-2003, 08:35 PM
Is it Brodda, the Easterling?
He was an ally of Morgoth, Manwe's brother, and he was married to Aerin, who helped Turin's mother, Morwen. Not sure how he fits into the last verse, though.
Tar-Palantir
03-02-2003, 09:10 PM
Gil-Galad, this is 'Bad Guy' trivia, so it has to be a bad guy.
TheSaucepanMan is right!
The last clue:
I was a harborer of the servant,
of one who killed with a break
The servant is Sador, the servant of Hurin's family and friend of Turin, who lived in the house of Brodda. Turin slew Brodda by breaking his neck.
(Unfinished Tales)

Don't get all mad at me like that Gil-Galad, no one is getting mad at you. I don't know what you mean. Can you please be a little clearer? Does what count?
The Saucepan Man
03-03-2003, 08:12 PM
OK. This one's fairly easy, I think (and yes it's definately a "bad guy"):
I stand by a river whispering my song
And you may think that I'm weeping
But rest a while and it won't be long
Before your mine while you're sleeping.
Who am I?
Tar-Palantir
03-03-2003, 10:22 PM
Why, that would be Old Man Willow, me thinks.
Gil-Galad
03-04-2003, 07:30 AM
i meant if its not a bad guy like Turin or Sam will it count and we proceed from that? or will the person have to start a new one but with a bad guy
The Saucepan Man
03-04-2003, 03:32 PM
Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
That is correct, 'tis Old Man Willow!
Your go, Tar-Palantir. smilies/smile.gif
Beren87
03-04-2003, 03:36 PM
Gil-Galad, I think I understand what your trying to say, and the answer would be that you have to create a new one with a bad guy.

Rider on the storm
Rider on the storm
This land became my home
But all were overthrown
Like a dog who wants a bone
As a captive brought alone
Rider on the storm
There's a killer on the seas
His brain is squirmin' with disease
He took a holiday
And wrought the worst of days
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the seas, yeah
Can anyone make sense of this?? I need more than just a name. smilies/cool.gif

Is it Sauron
Sauron was captured by Ar-Pharazon and brought to Numenor.
But this would later proved to be the downfall of Numenor.
Because Sauron corrupted the hearts of most people from Numenor.
And brought them to war with the Valar

WHAT? smilies/eek.gif
From what I gathered reading that, I think you meant that one of Annunfuiniel's guesses was correct, and that you could choose from either of them.
Usually, if someone says the right answer, whether it be with two guesses at the same time or one hundred, (although that would be cheating smilies/wink.gif), you give it to them.
...and please remember to spell correctly. It is embarrising to look at, I can't imagine what you must fell like. If you can't find the time to even spell correctly, maybe this site is not for you, Gil-galad.

Nope.
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
04-04-2003, 12:39 PM
Very unfounded guess, since I haven't ventured to that part of "Tolkien-land" for a while, but could it be Ar-Pharazon? He enslaved Sauron (for a time) in Numenor (Westernesse) so it might be possible that Sauron's weapons were kept there. *hopeful grin*

Annunfuiniel
04-14-2003, 03:14 PM
Ok, this goes cryptic again but it's dead easy as you can see:
In this story Cain, the first of the two,
got himself slain.
It's said that his slayer
cut off his head
and - as if that wasn't enough -
replaced it with Nana's head.
Now I'm confused: who slayed
and whom?

It's not stupid at all. I like the cryptic ones, Annunfuiniel. smilies/smile.gif
Not too sure how this works, but cutting off Cain's head (C) and replacing it with Nana's head (N), I get Nain.
So is it Nain of the Iron Hills (the slain) and Azog the Goblin King (his slayer)?
Edit: Mind you, Azog has already been guessed, so might it instead be Nain I and his slayer, the Balrog of Moria?

Have anything to do with Thror's return to Moria (followed by Balin one of Thorin's company...) in which case the bad guy involved could be the Necromancer, or perhaps the Witch King (first of the Nine?)

How about another "howler" then ie. Draugluin? smilies/confused.gif
Take a drink, but not initially going home tonight. - Draug(ht)?
One of Thorin's company follows. - -uin>>Oin??
He loses nothing but finds the first of the Nine. - the 'L' in the middle as in Lord of the Nazgul?
A biiiiit far fetched... *grin*
The Saucepan Man
04-28-2003, 07:06 AM
No, not far-fetched at all, Annunfuiniel. In fact, very near-fetched, as it is the correct answer. smilies/tongue.gif You seem to have a talent for guessing my attempts at cryptic clues. smilies/smile.gif
Take a drink, but not initially going home tonight. - This was indeed "Draught" without "ght", the initial letters of "going home tonight"
One of Thorin's company follows. He loses nothing but finds the first of the Nine. - The member of Thorin's company that I had in mind was Gloin, who loses "o" (nothing) but gains "u", the first letter of Ulairi, another name for the Nazgul, giving "gluin".
But them together, and you get Draugluin.
And sad howler? Well, the meaning of Draugluin is "blue wolf". smilies/tongue.gif
Well done. smilies/smile.gif

Take the Ring! You, make the long story short and you'll gain the third place from its rightful owner. And Nienna will water the lowered hill with her tears. Could it be used as a hide?

Arrgghh! This answer occurred to me right at the outset, but I couldn't see how it worked. The cloud has now lifted! smilies/mad.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif
Take the Ring! = Thering
You, make the long story short and you'll gain the third place from its rightful owner: Shorten "the" to "th" and add the third letter of "you" = Thuring
And Nienna will water the lowered hill with her tears. = Shorten "hill" to "hil" and water it = wethil
Could it be used as a hide? = Thuringwethil's skin was used by Luthien to disguise herself.
So the answer is Thuringwethil
Excellent one, Annun. smilies/smile.gif

How many varieties of Troll are mentioned by JRRT in connection with Middle Earth, and what are they?
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
05-20-2003, 09:24 AM
Six, I believe.
Cave-trolls (Met in Moria)
Hill-trolls (These chopped Aragorn's grampa)
Stone-trolls (Bilbo's trolls? I don't know for sure, but I'm fairly certain I've heard them mentioned)
Mountain-trolls (Weilders of Grond)
Snow-Trolls (This one I had to look up, Helm Hammerhand was compared to one, we never actually meet one)
Olog-hai (Bred by Sauron)

When doom approaches the halls of silent kings: This presumably refers to Aragorn fulfilling the prophecy of Malbeth the Seer and entering the Paths of the Dead to hold the Dead Kings to their oath.

Lasgalen, when answering riddles such as this, you should give an explanation of how you arrived at the answer. Well, I'm assuming that the Wormtongue bookmark has the little lizard thing on it. When Wormtongue considers leaving Saruman, Saruman reminds him and tells all the hobbits gathered around that Wormtongue killed Lotho, even though Grima denies it at first. It is at this time that he "realizes his wrong". He kills Saruman, and the grey mist that rises from Saruman's body "turns West then East then gone".

Voralphion
09-01-2003, 06:09 PM
The correct answer is Gothmog you are right Gwaihir. The first line was supposed to refer to the original host of balrogs, that was reduced to just seven or three. The line about the kings was the two high kings of the Noldor that Gothmog killed, Feanor and Fingon. I'm sorry the clue wasn't very good.
