OK, next question ...
3. To what is attributed the ferocity and determination of the Orcs' assault on Isildur and his Men at Gladden Fields?
Evisse the Blue
08-20-2003, 04:52 PM
I don't know if this is what you had in mind, just a guess: To the evil power of the Ring?
The Saucepan Man
08-20-2003, 05:45 PM
Spot on, Evisse. They are said (in a footnote to the Disaster of the Gladden Fields) to have been unconsciously spurred on (in part, at least) by the Ring's desire to return to its Lord.
Evisse the Blue - 3
4. Which Orc is referred to as having "wide and snuffling nostrils"?
Gwaihir the Windlord
08-21-2003, 02:17 AM
The tracker-Orc, that argued with another fighting-Orc and eventually killed him. The two nearly stumbled across Frodo and Sam, hiding from them in the Morannon.

No laughing matter, Saucepans smilies/smile.gif.
Was it Dunlendish blacksmiths, perhaps?
Turambar
08-22-2003, 06:53 AM
A passage in The Battles of the Fords of Isen in UT says of the Dunlendings that they were not well armed; a footnote (no. 11) then says: They [the Dunlendings] were without body-armour, having only among them a few hauberks gained by theft or in loot. The Rohirrim had the advantage in being supplied by the metal-workers of Gondor. In Isengard as yet only the heavy and clumsy mail of the Orcs was made, by them for their own uses. [Author's note.]
It's a bit ambiguous, but I think it means that the Dunlendings made no armor, and that the Isengard orcs made their own, poorly.

7. How is it that Pippin could understand the discussions of his Orcish captors?
Yavanna228
08-22-2003, 07:43 AM
To Pippin's surprise he found that much of the talk was intelligible; many of the Orcs were using ordinary language. Apparently the members of two or three quite different tribes were present, and they could not understand one another's orc-speech.
