5 years. . .thats impressive Azaelia! Congratulations :)

And congratulations to you as well Firefoot, I hope that you both will spend lots of more years in these Barrows.

It is amazing how long have people been around in this site... I am by far not an expert, but in most boards I've seen there is a huge turnover of members, save a few "old timers". Here there are lots of people coming, but it seems that no-one goes away.

Perhaps we've all been affected by the barrow curse and now are forced to haunt this lands for-ever, albeit subconsciously so.

Regardless, happy deathday to Zali and Firefoot!!!

Can't pass up this opportunity to say, "Happy bi... wait, deathday!!". I'd like to third the "I enjoyed your company" motion... You were one of the first 'downers I started talking to, and lots of fun too!

By the way, I still think you are a huge dancing kitten and nothing can change that.

I used to be like that, but now I know that Valier is infact a "biker" with tatoos all over.

I missed my deathday by a few days. But I promise I didn't forget...I was away on vacation in Georgia. Anyways, I may be late, but I will still celebrate. Five years is certainly a long time, though I'm not sure if all those years count since I was away part of that time. Oh well...the main point is that I came back, and I'm quite glad of that. :)

It is funny how we forget Deathdays as they (at least forum wise) should be more important than birthdays, at least that is how I have always looked at it.

It is funny that even though my approach is that deathdays are more important, I am always more nervouse that non notices my birthday. I even forgot my own deathday earlier this month.

Oh, I think I forgot my 5th Deathday... According to this forum, it was the 14th, though according to the old forum it was the 15th, so by the latter standard, just on the other side of this country I am technically not belatedly remembering. Hm.

But apparently I absolutely failed to annoy CaptainofDespair this year and announce his 3rd Deathday back in June. Anyway, you can blame me completely for his presence, how little it may be at many times.

I cannot believe it, but today is my Deathday. At my timezone, there is almost midnight, so the day is almost gone... but it must have been sometime in the last ten or so hours when it was precisely one year. It feels... strange. Not that it would seem too long, or too short for me to be around here... it's just... I don't know, somewhat magic. One year at the Downs. Something unspeakable. A year ago, I had no idea that I'm going to be here still at this time, I had no idea what all can be found in this place... not an idea who are the people around... A blank page waiting to be filled. And what am I going to say the next year? Am I going to be here also? I hope I will... the Downs, and also you Downers, have become important to me.

Yesterday was my 6th deathday, and by a lucky coincidence, I happened to spend a part of it with two Downers! I met Rikae and Macalaure (more about that on the "I met a fellow BDer" thread), and as we sat together chatting about the Downs, it occurred to me that I joined on Jan. 12, 2002!

Six years is too short a time to spend with such excellent and admirable Downers! May the years to come continue to be enjoyable, as the past ones have been.

Surely they will! And though I (and not only I but also lots of others, I believe) have been here for much shorter time than you, it is obvious that the Downs would not be without you what they are. If they would ever... so, may your spirit keep its spirit! That's probably the best I could wish you for your deathday :)

You know, I often find myself reading a thread and when something or terribly clever comes up I'll start laughing and say to myself, "Oh how I love these guys." It's really the people here that makes the Downs so wonderful...I've never seen any other forum like it and so well bonded. Anyways, I really do love the Downs (I don't know how I went almost two years without it) and I can't imagine leaving again anytime soon (and if I ever did disappear for some odd reason, I'm bound to return).

In fact, I can see myself at 30 still haunting the Downs. That'd be way cool actually...because then I could say, "Today is my 16th Deathday." :D

Hmmm...It would seem I celebrated a death over two weeks ago, but I still look relatively good and smell fairly fresh *sniffs shirt for tell-tale odor*. Who says all those preservatives in processed foods are necessarily a bad thing?

Which reminds me of a lyric I wrote a couple centuries ago from a song aptly entitled The Artifical Flavor, Monosodium Glutamate Blues...

When I die they won't embalm me
I am already well preserved
I'm a walking Tutankhamun
With all these chemicals in reserve
I got cellophane veins
And plastic-coated nerves.

Yes, I've gone rather quiet in recent years, but I still stroll among the hills, passing them by on the East side no less, when it's quiet and no one is about...I'm amazed both to see the venerable Sir Underhill posting and to realise he's really been here for eight years... Thank you, ladies. It's hard to believe it's been such a long time since I first clapped eyes on the eerie green blade of the Downs. A lot of changes, a lot of water under the bridge, many friends found and many lost, and through it all, even as I've become more and more tree-ish, a click on the Downs has been nearly a daily ritual during that time.

I feel positively Elvish. Some day, I suppose, I'll sail West and leave the Downs behind me. But not today.

Looks like Mr Underhill is getting a little melancholy.Aye, that happens sometimes when I think back on the first few years of the site. The fact that my old compadre HerenIstarion is currently in a war zone doesn't help my disposition. :(
To me, Mister Underhill was always more like a shadow on the borders of old stories...Ai, has it come to that? I post from time to time in the hidden administrative sections of the Downs, pitching in to squash spammers or make sure the machinery continues to clank away behind the scenes, so I feel a little more active than I appear to the naked eye. But I'm actually rereading LotR for the first time in a few years, so maybe I'll dredge up a few new ideas for Books, and the Hobbit movies are sure to draw an opinion or three as well.

Anywho, thanks and regards to all.

I am only too happy to second what Nogrod has said about Heren's encouragement of newcomers. It is something for which I am forever in HI's debt - as well as his education programme regarding Georgia - this time last year I was able to explain to my family the reasons for Georgia playing rugby to such a high level, now alas I watch the news and fret about the safety of Heren and family. So I send a deathday wish for better times in his Shire.

Indeed a happy deathday, Mr. HI. Now eight years - that indeed feels almost unimaginable; it made me think how relative the numbers sometimes are - because while I can well imagine let's say eight apples, but have a problem with imagining a million apples; then if I try to imagine eight years at the Downs, I have a problem rightaway... but there's somebody who actually managed it

Just a quick note to mark my 8 year anniversary here (and the first time I've had the presence of mind to notice). The forum has undergone a few changes since my first visit, but the Downs remains the best Tolkien site and forum to be found. Thanks to my intriguing and erudite fellow Downers for giving new meaning to the phrase 'never a dull moment', all the mods and admins for their tireless efforts, and most of all to the Wight, who somehow keeps this big ship flying.
With any luck, 10 years will be just around the corner.

Cheers

Yay!

The Mistress of Penguins has been dead for four years today.

May her Lordship forever stay dead on the BD! :D

EDIT: To make it clear - Happy Deathday, Lommy!

Thanks, Might. :) It always delights (and surprises) me when someone remembers my deathday without me first gloating about it.

Four years... it's a long time, for sure. Especially if you think that I was not even fifteen when I joined (and you can very well see that in my first posts :D). I do hope I will stay here forever. This place and all the people have just become incredibly important to me, in so many ways and levels...

PS. Belated congrats, Inziladun. You make me feel like a newbie... ;)

With joining the praise of Lommy's deathday, I would also like to wish belated happy deathday to Valier, which was a few days ago, unfortunately I haven't been around to wish her on that very day. And of course, a belated happy deathday to Inziladun (and I agree with Lommy on that newbie thing, now what am I supposed to say...)

But anyway, agreed about Valier. Belated deathday congrats to the ultimate 'downsian feline, may she stay here for a long time from now! :D

You, Legate, Durelin, and Eönwë have been far more active here than I have in a shorter span of time, hardly newbies. ;)

Many thanks to all.

Why, of course I will! I have already taken the Quiz Room by force and slowly I will spread around in the other forums like a virus. :D

We certainly all hope for that ;) :D And belated happy deathday, Miggy... hmph, I always watch out for Downers' deathdays, but about the day just before them I always forget about it...

No, I think that was me who said that. And you said that Miggey sounds weird and that it should be either Miggy or Miggie, I think.

Today is, in many parts of the world, the Feast of the Epiphany, which is the feast of Jesus being revealed to us as God among us. Although this may mean nothing to most of you, I find it wicked cool that January 6th is ALSO my Deathday. Not that I intend to make any Christ-like comparisons for myself about that being the day I revealed myself among you... I'll make it more flattering and say it's the day the awesomeness of the Downs was revealed to me. In any case, four years of being a Downer have somewhere disappeared, and I consider myself lucky to have looked it up in time to celebrate it (I knew it was early January, but forgot the date). The good times I've had on this site, and off of it with friendships forged because of it, grow more numerous every year.

Now that is nice :) Belated happy deathday, then. And hope you are going to have a long stay with us yet...

And just following the train of thoughts you started, it occured to me that in that case the "coolest" Deathday would be probably the Good Friday. But, (perhaps fortunately) its calendar date changes every year, so one cannot have it.

The whole day today, the thought that there's something I should be remembering kept gnawing at me... and turns out it should have happened yesterday. Boo for amnesia.

Happy deathday, Michael. :) It's amazing that it's already been four years, but somehow it's not hard to believe.

And late deathday greetings to Kath, who turned 5 years dead last January 4! What a perfect day to join the Downs. ;)

(There really should be some sort of traditions attached to a deathday)

Thanks for all the good wishes! No, I had no special celebration; unfortunately, real life is taking up so much of my time that I have little left over to spend on the Downs. Hopefully, that will change in the future.
