Yes! For the first time ever I've managed to catch my deathday on time. Every year I think about it, then forget until too late. It might be partly because I keep thinking I joined on the 7th, not the 6th...though I'm not sure why I think that...
Okay, I was so sure that my deathday was yesterday, but when I checked I saw it was on the 7th instead. Then I look back at my post from last year and see I mixed it up the other way. How weird is that? My deathday seems to change by the year...could it be because of timezone differences? Because if I joined say 11pm MST on the 6th then technically I joined on the 7th EST (at 1am), which is what my time zone is currently set to..

So I'm no longer actually sure when my deathday is. But either way, it doesn't change that I've now been a Barrow Downer for seven years. Geez, that's a long time. I think back to when I was this 13 year old kid who was introduced to this site by a friend, and boy have things changed since then. Both me and the website. Funny to think that I've been here long enough to watch fellow Downers grow up and change with me. It's rather awesome, really. And just wait until another seven years pass...

It seems appropriate that out of all days, today will be the day I put up the admin thread for my game (yes, it'll be up sometime tonight).

I just noticed I also passed my two-year anniversary a few days ago. Alas, that I can continue on this board for another ten years and still be considered a junior member with the likes of Brin having posted for most of this century!

Well I could return the wishes and wish you a belated happy deathday too :) But hey, two years is a long time... I remember when I... uh. And here I thought how "young" I am here, but at the same time that I am already quite "old" here... well, for example thinking that it seems to me like yesterday when you joined, Eönwë. Thanks everybody. :) I feel slightly old now, though - I've been here now for five years, and that's more or less one fourth of my life. It's so weird to think I was a silly teenager few months short of 15 when I joined, and now I'm still almost as silly and a few months short of 20 which starts with the number 2 and is thus unavoidably "adult" age... (Not meaning 20 is very grown up, but you can't really pull the "I'm a kid" card anymore, and besides, it's not anything "-teen" anymore. I'm going to be happy about that. )

Belated congrats to you, Val. *hugs*

I've just had a thought that currently, with the age of the 'Downs as it is, if you multiply the number of years you've been on here by 9, you get your 'Downs age equivalent in human years.

Hakon
12-21-2009, 09:26 PM
You just want to be able to say you are 18. Where as I am barely 9 according to that.

I've just had a thought that currently, with the age of the 'Downs as it is, if you multiply the number of years you've been on here by 9, you get your 'Downs age equivalent in human years.

So I'm 81? I don't feel like it.... ;)

I feel more like 45 then I do 9 or my real age of 15.

Eönwë
12-22-2009, 09:25 AM
You just want to be able to say you are 18.
Well obviously the true "Coming of Age" varies for each 'Downer, and is when you get a personal title, but I think now I'm maybe starting to lose a little of my newbie "not-properly-rotten-yet"ness. Just a little, mind you.

So I'm 81? I don't feel like it.... ;)
Well you are one of the "venerated elders" from the "Early Days" of the 'Downs, even though you haven't been around all that time. Anyway, Wights are like Numenoreans at their peak, so even though you may look old in normal human years, you've barely started your 'Downs career. ;)

Hakon
12-22-2009, 05:21 PM
Wait so how do you get those personal titles? I know the admins and I think mods too give them to you but what do you have to do to get them?

Eonwe, as I stated before I feel more like 45 then I do 9 or 15 or the 18 I will be in 2011 on this site.

Estelyn Telcontar
12-23-2009, 03:50 AM
Wait so how do you get those personal titles?

Here's a brief information: Barrow-Downs FAQ thread (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=6010)

Practically speaking: Once a year or so, The Barrow-Wight chooses a list of members who receive a personal title. The requirements:

1) A minimum of 500 posts
2) Positive contribution to the forum

Several factors contribute to this, including recommendations by moderators and administrators, and reputation status. If you are chosen, you will receive a PM and can then choose an appropriate title.

Happy deathday Lommy and Eönwë! It appears that I have once more forgot my very own deathday until a few days after the fact. 13 December people! It just so happens that late December is the busiest time of the year for me with school and such; though it is still no excuse for forgetting the day you died. Maybe this is because I had such an uninteresting death though, who knows.

As I believe I mentioned in my DeathDay post last year, January 6th is the Solemnity of the Epiphany on the calendar of my religion--albeit in my jurisdiction and others we moved it to Sunday this year as most--and it also happens to be the solemn anniversary of a personal epiphany--the day I joined the Barrow-downs in 2005, at the tender age of not-quite-18.

Given that, only just 2 days ago, I was at the biggest Barrow-downer gathering of all time, and had what I can genuinely call the best, and craziest, holiday of my life--not to mention the only real New Year's Party I would ever say I attended--given all that, I am considering my DeathDay a rather significant event in my life... and as the fallout from Bostonmoot (but more on that in the appropriate thread) begins to slowly get sorted and filed, I think it's only going to become more apparent how much of an impact this site has made on my life.

So I thank you all once again, on this annual celebration, for the wonderful presence you have all been--and are--in my life.

Happy Deathday Formy!! I miss you all so much already and will agree with you on just how much of an impact this site has made on me. I think, if we all leave a gathering like that with tearful or sorrowful goodbyes, we have all been touched by this site and by the amazing people who are a part of it.

And so I would like to say again, Happy Deathday Formendacil! It was a pleasure and an honor to have spent all of last week leading up to your Deathday with you!! :D

Wow....hard to believe that it has already been four years that I have been a member on this site. Granted, approximately two of them were spent on hiatus(...uh....I mean...leave of absence :p) but they were wonderful two years spent here...when I was merely fifteen years of age. I am quite glad that I have decided to come back and start chatting with all of you again, and Bostonmoot reiterated how much I have missed this and all of you. Meeting that many Downer's with my best friend of life and ringing in the New Year with all of you was the best thing that has ever happened to me for you are all wonderfully intelligent, amazing, people.

And a giant thank you must go out to a few people. First and foremost, my dearest Wilwa for first introducing me to this site all those years ago. Second, to Nienna and Brinn for letting me go to Bostonmoot even though I had been gone for so long. And third, to everyone for making this the best site there is and making me (under threat of physical violence by Mira and puppy dog eyes from Boro and everyone else who attended Bostonmoot yelling at me to get my rear end in gear and post already :p) return. I am happy I did and cannot wait to share in more memories with all of you!

Happy death day to those who have been in the barrow far longer than I! My own death day was back in January (it's only a couple of years, so the body is relatively fresh). Today, though, I feel like the unquiet grave, as Montezuma's Revenge is making a miserably hot and humid day that much more miserable. Can a non-Elven person die twice? I may have an answer if this keeps up.

May all your barrows be cool and restful....

I almost forgot my deathday myself, and was not around to receive your wishes on the day, but at least belatedly, let me say that the years I have spent here are too little among such amazing dead... so I should probably just add...

Hey, hey, what are you so mad about? It's the forum theme. ;) Those who read Fellowship of the Ring know that the Barrow Downs are located between Bree and the Old Forest, and that they are "haunted" by Barrow Wights. Anyone who dares to cross the Downs at night is "killed" by them and joins the ranks of the undead.

For me joining this forum was certainly a change for the better, and I think I speak for the majority here as well. The "deathday" is like a birthday on this forum. :)

Just popped over here by chance and then suddenly remembered October's just been... An entire decade has now passed since I began haunting the site. How the time flies. I took up permanent residency as Meela a year and a bit after I actually came to the site and the forum, so it's nine years of continuous posting, but ten years now overall. I might even bake a cake to celebrate.

(Update) On second thoughts, scrap the cake. Have decided on a fitting way to celebrate ten years of talking, thinking, watching, living, breathing LotR. I am going to read the Lord of the Rings for the first time ever.

As melodramatic as it might be to say: I died on August second 2007 and my life has never been the same. These past five years have been the most eventful and important years of my life. I have discovered more and more bits about my personality and that is at least partially because of the 'Downs. I haven't posted a lot for a year or two, but I still love it here.

Thanks. There really hasn't been a whole lot happening on the Downs recently, except for WW, which I am really not all that interested in (please don't lynch me :p). I can't say that I really miss the days where I posted more, after all, I have said some pretty silly things.

It is such an odd feeling having the Downs in my life for so long, but only being my age. I do still feel like I am literally sixteen years old (yes, I really mean "literally", not "figuratively"). Actually, my deathday was 10 days ago, but it's so scary and I refuse to count anymore how manieth it is... I am sure I don't want to know, because I am probably already as "old" as the oldest members were when I joined the 'Downs, and that is something I refuse to accept. *Walks away, whistling "Forever Young"*

Thanks! Sometimes I feel like an "old-timer" too, but when people from, like, 2002 start talking I feel so new still.

You are, actually. But it only happens once in a deathtime. I think the occurence is quite special. Mine will only be in 2020.

Anyways, happy deathday!

I missed my 10th deathday!! I think I read the date as the 1st of July, rather than the 7th of January. Oops!

Anyway, thank you all for being such excellent and admirable Wights. You've put up with my nonsense and stupidity for ten years, here's to another ten! *gets shot in the face by the BWH*

If that's what you get shot for...

...may the BWH have many more reasons to do it again (but pardon you every time)! :p

Oh dear another year gone and not even the foothills of canonicity tackled.. really must do something about that... don't like to welch on a deal. So missed the official anniversary on Tuesday because all I could see of the downs was a load of grids but its restoration to health a source of great joy given how much of the past nine years I have spent here.

When I became a full time Downer, I promised myself that I will be a proper Downer and never forget my deathday (it's like forgetting New Year!). Took me only 3 years to break that promise. :D

My twelfth deathday was this past week. I am immensely fond of you all, and twelve years is too short a time to be dead among such excellent and admirable wights.

If Estelyn is at 12, then I must be too.

Gackh!

(Technically it is on the 23rd, but being up in years at this point, who knows if I will remember.)

Anniversary of date joining the Barrow Downs. Since the Barrows housed wights and as a new members first. Post count related title is "newly deceased", we say we died when we joined. And in the busy old days it really could take over your life

When I scrolled to the bottom of the page, I saw that it's morm's birthday, and I felt funny, because I was sure I've wished him happy birthday recently. To test my sanity, I skimmed through the last few months of the birthday thread to see if I mistakenly thought that someone with a similar username was morm, but no, I did not post that anytime recent. I decided that time flies, and then realized that I once again missed my deathday, and if it wasn't for morm's birthday, I would miss it completely. :o

Luckily, I have a memorable death day. The 1st of September. However, I can't guarantee that I will remember it when it comes around.

Happy deathday sally! I think you're not in too much trouble; last year I almost forgot my birthday.

I remember the date of my deathday, but I believe I only actually remembered to commemorate it on the day itself once. I think most people here remember the day, or at least month, or their deathday, but it just kinda floats by without you noticing.
