Try "The Making of the Movie Trilogy"

We need a new smiley, an evil smile, not just a mad one. This is the perfect opportunity to use it

Anorial
06-01-2004, 10:06 PM
Okay, I can't decide if you are evil or a brat :p

How about No. 1, Weka Street, Miramar?

(Thanks for the hint and how do you know they didn't move? double :p :p )

Orcrist
06-02-2004, 07:45 PM
Darn you Anorial  I was having fun :D
Did they move? That wouldn't make sense but I guess...

Anorial
06-05-2004, 01:07 PM
Why shouldn't they move? I understand they've been very successful these days. :D

Okay, here goes:

According to Matt Aitken, Weta Digital Model Supervisor, how high in meters was Dwarrowdelf from floor to ceiling?

Gil-Galad
06-06-2004, 07:27 PM
funny how this whole part of thread has only been two people...too bad i forgot anwser since i got a good question...

Orcrist
06-07-2004, 11:33 AM
7 meters?

Kath
06-07-2004, 12:04 PM
I thought 9m?

Anorial
06-07-2004, 07:04 PM
7 or 9 meters....that's not very high.....are we talking about the same Dwarrowdelf here? ;)

Orcrist
06-07-2004, 08:10 PM
100m?
Wait, are you talking about the miniature or the actual thing?

Samwise
06-07-2004, 09:17 PM
50 meters?

Kath
06-08-2004, 12:14 PM
27 feet? Its a number I remeber from somewhere.

Anorial
06-09-2004, 06:32 PM
Okay, here's a hint...you can find it in the same DVD package which features the Dwarrowdelf in the movie. Finding out what the Dwarrowdelf is, especially in the context of the movie-making process, would be a big help. And no, not the miniature because there wasn't one.

Thorongil
06-10-2004, 02:29 AM
Dwarrowdelf is the dwarwen city in Moria. And I guess it's about 20 meters or so.

Kath
06-10-2004, 12:48 PM
Ah there was no miniature - no wonder i couldn't find it in the book!
Ok one last guess before i go and look it up - 1000 feet?

Samwise
06-10-2004, 03:27 PM
Darrowdelf is...

Thank you, Thorongil. I haven't got a DVD, so I'm afraid the above clue helped me none whatsoever.

This is probably just me, but I find it interesting that a Dwarven city would have the word "elf" in it. :p

As to my guess, (though Thorongil's probably right) 23 meters?

Anorial
06-14-2004, 09:08 PM
Well, here's the ultimate hint...from the book cause it's easier.

"'I will now risk a little real light.' He raised his staff, and for a brief instant there was a blaze like a flash of lightning. Great shadows sprang up and fled, and for a second they saw a vast roof far above their heads upheld by many mighty pillars hewn of stone. Before them and on either side stretched a huge empty hall; its black walls, polished and smooth as glass, flashed and glittered."

What the moviemakers called the Dwarrowdelf was that massively huge hall in Moria with all those pillars (and, in my opinon, one of the most emotional musical pieces on the soundtrack). Matt Aitken, Weta Digital Model Supervisor, was saying that they couldn't make a miniature of it because it was just so massive. It was, he said, 45 meters from floor to ceiling, which is staggering considering that's around 135 feet. Very cool!

None of you got it exactly but Samwise was very close at 50 meters so your turn Samwise son of Hamfast.

Orcrist
06-14-2004, 09:45 PM
I didn't know we were playing "closest guess wins", but oh well. :)

Anorial
06-14-2004, 10:24 PM
Well, I read the rules and couldn't find how to handle it and emailed Saucepanman and he didn't answer so I made a decision. I'm sure Samwise will have an excellent question! (no pressure now! :D )

The Saucepan Man
06-15-2004, 10:04 AM
Sorry for not replying Anoriel, but I was away for the weekend. To belatedly answer the point, it's within the question-setter's discretion to accept an answer that he/she thinks is sufficiently close.

Samwise
06-21-2004, 07:45 PM
Just got the note from Orcist. My computer's down, so I'm on my mother's, plus we've had company galore all week. I will see what I can do about a question ASAP, though I certainly cannot promise anything all that challenging. ;)

Samwise
06-22-2004, 05:06 PM
This will either be really easy, or wrong. If it's wrong, I apologize, I have a killer headache and a busy household at the moment. :p

In FOTR, who played the adorable little big-eyed Hobbit child who was listening to Bilbo's troll story at the party?

I know, there were a lot of children there, but there was a little girl right in the front with huge eyes. Don't need her name, just "who" she was (ie: she was related to a member of the "crew".) ;)

Probably super easy, but-- I've got a killer headache, what can I say. :(

Orcrist
06-22-2004, 08:21 PM
She was Peter Jackson's daughter.

Samwise
06-22-2004, 09:28 PM
...totally easy. Killer headache, what can I say?

Darn cute she was, though. Oddly, seeing her in that scene made me think of Sam sitting at Bilbo's feet listening to the same story...

;)

Your go, Orcist.

Lady of the Pants
06-22-2004, 10:48 PM
Orcist, please post a question soon. I just got finished reading all seven pages and I'm hooked. I want to answer one. ;)

Anorial
06-23-2004, 03:57 PM
Darn, that was an easy one! I was on holidays so I missed it ;)

Point of fact, both of his children were hobbit children. You also see them as Rohan children in the caves at Helm's Deep and Gondorian children when Faramir is riding through the streets on Gondor on the suicide mission to Osgiliath.

C'mon Orcrist, make it a goodie! (and see if you can find a source to use other than the Making of the Movie Trilogy book :p)

Samwise
06-23-2004, 05:11 PM
Sheesh. Talk about a family affair.....

Orcist?

Orcrist
06-23-2004, 08:37 PM
How many "dead horses" did Jackson ask Weta to make?

Have fun ;)

(Maybe next time Anorial ;) )

Samwise
06-23-2004, 08:48 PM
500?

Orcrist
06-23-2004, 08:52 PM
Ouch! A little off there Samwise. ;)

The Perky Ent
06-23-2004, 09:39 PM
2,000? I really have no clue, but it's fun anyways ;)

Anorial
06-24-2004, 12:42 AM
Darn! I can't remember where I saw that. Somewhere around 21 fake dead horses were made. I do remember seeing that somewhere....now where the heck was that?.....

Lindir
06-24-2004, 11:08 AM
was it 150? i think :p

Anorial
06-24-2004, 12:21 PM
Can I change my answer?

Anorial
06-24-2004, 02:34 PM
Okay, I can't wait any longer  40 fake dead horses were made :D

Samwise
06-24-2004, 05:41 PM
I have no clue either.

1,000 ?

Orcrist
06-27-2004, 09:50 PM
Anorial got it.

Anorial
07-01-2004, 12:34 AM
Okay, here's one that I find interesting (hopefully you will too):

Prior to The Fellowship of the Rings, most movies had only parts or certain scenes digitally graded (adjusting colors, contrast etc. using computers). According to Peter Jackson (and he should know!), what percentage of Fellowship was adjusted digitally?

wilwarin538
07-01-2004, 07:42 AM
Im gonna give a guess, 65%?

Kath
07-01-2004, 03:23 PM
Well there must have been something in pretty much every scene so 95%?

Mad Baggins
07-01-2004, 05:17 PM
80%?

Samwise
07-01-2004, 08:11 PM
75%?

Anorial
07-05-2004, 05:30 PM
Well, two of you are very close and equally close so I'm going to have to require the exact percentage. :)

Sleepy Ranger
07-06-2004, 02:23 AM
um, 83%?

Gil-Galad
07-06-2004, 09:36 AM
77%?

Mad Baggins
07-06-2004, 10:58 AM
92.765% :D Just kidding...

92%?

Sleepy Ranger
07-06-2004, 11:03 AM
um changing my older answer 78%

Orcrist
07-06-2004, 11:58 AM
88%

Anorial
07-06-2004, 01:11 PM
There's a real obvious one y'all are missing!

wilwarin538
07-06-2004, 01:22 PM
100%?

Lindir
07-06-2004, 01:43 PM
85%? :p

paavo
07-06-2004, 03:19 PM
0%?

Anorial
07-06-2004, 07:19 PM
Sorry paavo and wilwarin...not that obvious I guess ;)

Lindir's got the right idea...think, would Peter Jackson say "47.23% of the movie was digitally graded"? No! Also, check out the extras on the FotR DVD EE for the answer. :)

paavo
07-07-2004, 03:15 PM
50 % then?

symestreem
07-07-2004, 05:59 PM
70%?

Nirvana II
07-07-2004, 06:06 PM
50%?????????

Anorial
07-07-2004, 07:49 PM
Phew!! symestreem got it. I think it's pretty remarkable that they went over 70% of the movie, tweaking and adjusting it. For any of you who work on computers, especially with Photoshop or something, you can just imagine how much work that is! Just another example of how awesome PJ and the gang were!

Over to you symestreem!

Anorial
07-12-2004, 08:11 PM
symestreem, I got an email saying you'd posted a question about Brad Dourif....where did it go!?

symestreem
07-12-2004, 08:19 PM
Name three things the makeup people did to Brad Dourif's face.

Anorial
07-12-2004, 08:35 PM
I'll say:
-gave him a spiky nose
-thickened one eyelid to make his face lopsided
-gave him slightly clouded contact lenses
-painted his face white with a bluish tinge
-air-brushed veins onto his face
-shaved his eyebrows
-gave him "weeping pustules"
-gave him dandruff and a greasy, patchy wig of straggly hair (not on his face but what the heck)
:)

symestreem
07-13-2004, 06:17 AM
I'd say that qualifies. :)

Anorial
07-13-2004, 08:02 AM
According to Ngila Dickson, Costume Designer, how many meters of cloth did each Black Rider costume take to make?

Samwise
07-13-2004, 05:03 PM
50?

wilwarin538
07-13-2004, 05:20 PM
30?

Anorial
07-13-2004, 06:07 PM
Good shot Samwise!! You've got it....over 50 meters of cloth was used for each Black Rider costume! :)

Samwise
07-13-2004, 08:21 PM
....I got it right? Go figure....:p I'll be back with a "fact" as soon as I can find one! ;)

Samwise
07-13-2004, 08:34 PM
Why was Liv Tyler outfitted in reds and blues in the movies? ;)

Anorial
07-15-2004, 08:52 PM
Because all the other elves were in pastel shades and they wanted her to stand out?

Samwise
07-15-2004, 10:10 PM
No, but you're on the right track.

Anorial
07-15-2004, 10:12 PM
They wanted her to look like royalty?

Samwise
07-15-2004, 10:14 PM
No...

Kath
07-16-2004, 07:47 AM
Was it so she was the opposite of somebody? Possibly Eowyn, or maybe Galadriel?

Samwise
07-16-2004, 07:52 AM
No....it had to do with the other elves that she was around.

Kath
07-16-2004, 07:58 AM
Well then is it because she's Elrond's daughter? She is of a more noble family?

Samwise
07-16-2004, 08:02 AM
No. It had to do with Liv Tyler herself, not her character.

Kath
07-16-2004, 08:06 AM
The richer colours made her look paler, more elvenlike?

Anorial
07-16-2004, 09:23 AM
Well, they're darker colors so maybe because she wasn't super slender, they made her look more elven slender?

NightKnight
07-16-2004, 11:12 AM
Because she had dark hair?

Samwise
07-16-2004, 04:03 PM
No, no and no....though Kath is closest, it had to do with her coloring.

elfwishes999
07-16-2004, 04:15 PM
were they her favorite colors?

wilwarin538
07-16-2004, 04:21 PM
maybe cause she was one of the few elves to have dark hair? that could be really off, but oh well.

Samwise
07-16-2004, 04:37 PM
It DID have to do with Liv Tyler's physical self. ;) I don't know how to give anymore hints without totally giving it away....well....

It had to do with what I said above, and the way the other elves were dressed, according to the magazine article I have....

Orcrist
07-16-2004, 07:22 PM
Her eye color maybe?

Samwise
07-16-2004, 08:26 PM
No, not her eyes....

Orcrist
07-16-2004, 09:00 PM
She was a female? (That makes no sense but I can't think of anything else)

Samwise
07-16-2004, 11:16 PM
It had to do with her skin coloring....and the other Elves.

wilwarin538
07-17-2004, 08:02 AM
she was darker then the other elves so the reds and blues made her look lighter?

Happy birthday to me!!!! :D

Samwise
07-17-2004, 08:47 AM
Not exactly....anyone have a copy of the May 2004 Entertainment Weekly Special Collector's issue? That's where I got this. :p

PS: Happy Birthday, wilwarin! ;)

Kath
07-17-2004, 01:10 PM
Was it something to do with the clothes they originally out in swamping her? So they simplified them so she wasn't so buried - therefore making her look more ethereal. I have just made this up so feel free to laugh.

Samwise
07-17-2004, 04:24 PM
...but no. :( It had to do with Liv Tyler's skin and the clothing of the OTHER Elves.

Kath
07-18-2004, 04:01 AM
Erm . . . she had paler skin than the other elves and they wanted to show this up?

Samwise
07-18-2004, 08:16 AM
Oh, boy...you're kind of sort of close, Kath. It had to do with something clashing...(colorwise)....

Kath
07-18-2004, 03:10 PM
The paler clothes of the type worn by the other elves clashed with her skin colour so they put her in darker clothes?

Samwise
07-18-2004, 03:54 PM
Ah, Kath's close enough.

According to the article in the Special Edition of Entertainment Weekly (RE: "The Costumer; Ngila Dickson)

"Since the grays, greens, and yellows that represented the color scheme for most Elves clashed with Liv Tyler's complexion, she was outfitted in more complementary reds and blues. "

Kath has the floor, so to speak. ;)

Anorial
07-23-2004, 01:15 PM
Bump!

Samwise
07-23-2004, 02:35 PM
 Kath? You out there?

Kath
07-24-2004, 05:18 AM
Sorry! This'll have to be a quick one because I'm off on holiday tomorrow so:
Who was to play Aragorn originally?

Anorial
07-24-2004, 07:56 AM
Stuart Townsend

Kath
07-24-2004, 07:57 AM
Yup.

Samwise
07-24-2004, 09:35 AM
...but we're SO glad it was Viggo Mortensen....;)

Anorial
07-24-2004, 03:15 PM
What role(s) did Lawrence Makoare play in which movie(s) and what was his character name in the role(s)?

wilwarin538
07-24-2004, 04:28 PM
he played a uruk named Lurtz in the fellowship, an Orc named gothmog in ROTK and The Witchking in the RotK.

Anorial
07-24-2004, 04:31 PM
All yours wilwarin!

wilwarin538
07-24-2004, 04:40 PM
Where was the big Palennor Fields horse charge shot?

Lindir
07-25-2004, 11:12 AM
Twizel? I think...maybe that was the Rohan calvary charge.....oh well... :p

wilwarin538
07-25-2004, 11:17 AM
it is twizel, your go

Lindir
07-25-2004, 11:26 AM
Which actor was originally supposed to play Bilbo?

Orcrist
07-29-2004, 10:22 AM
Anthony Hopkins?

Samwise
07-29-2004, 11:02 AM
I think Orcist has it.

The Perky Ent
07-29-2004, 11:07 AM
6 1/3?

Orcrist
07-29-2004, 07:34 PM
Uh Perky, what does 6 1/3 mean?

Anorial
07-30-2004, 01:29 PM
lol! :)

Lindir
08-03-2004, 11:34 AM
Yes! Indeed, Orcrist has the right answer... :p

Orcrist
08-06-2004, 09:34 AM
Name:
-the creator
-the name
of the program that created random people that had their own traits and responded to their environment. This is how they filmed massive battle scenes like Helm's Deep.

Orcrist
08-10-2004, 06:47 PM
Anyone have an answer? Hello?

Samwise
08-10-2004, 09:31 PM
I'm sorry, I'm afraid I haven't the slightest idea. :(

The Perky Ent
08-10-2004, 09:37 PM
I do! Stephen Regelous was the creator of Massive, the program responsible for the Last Alliance, Helms Deep, Moria, Pelennor Fields, Black gate, and all those shots with tons of baddies :D

Samwise
08-10-2004, 09:40 PM
"Massive"...great name for it. ;)

Another of my homes... (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MightyOrbotsFanPage/)

Orcrist
08-11-2004, 09:38 PM
You got it, Perky. ;)

The Perky Ent
08-11-2004, 10:18 PM
:D Massive is awesome! Of course I'd get it! Anyways, here's the new question:

This person was only in two movies in their lifetime, but it only takes one to make a difference. Though from the beginning of the end he departed, he will always be remembered.

Who is the character, and who plays him?

InklingElf
08-11-2004, 10:50 PM
Boromir!

Morsul the Dark
08-11-2004, 10:59 PM
Inkling sorry to burst you bubble but

Boromir Sean Bean(there are two parts to that question) but Inkling Ill let you go if its right since you gave me the answer

InklingElf
08-12-2004, 03:08 AM
In truth Morsul I can't tell the difference -- I got stuck to typecasting from my grandma, hence the Fact that she calls Leonard Nimoy=Leonard Spock

In this case it must be Boromir Bean -- na doesn't sound right -- rather:Sean Boromir

The Perky Ent
08-12-2004, 08:50 AM
Nope. Boromir isn't the right answer. Think a smaller part!

Orcrist
08-12-2004, 09:49 AM
How 'bout Pippin, played by Billy Boyd?

Evisse the Blue
08-12-2004, 11:23 AM
This person was only in two movies in their lifetime
How can it be Sean Bean then, people?? The man had an amazing career back when LOTR movie was only a gleam in PJ's eye.

I'll guess Sala Baker, as I know for sure Billy Boyd made more than two movies.

InklingElf
08-13-2004, 01:41 AM
I've been contemplating what "from the beginning of the end" means -- So I'm thinking Two Towers but no it can't be Craig Parker (Haldir) because he's in three movies!

BTW:Am I mistaken for thinking Sala Baker is one of the Uruk Hai?

Perky:Just how minor is this character?

The Perky Ent
08-13-2004, 09:10 AM
Pippin? this character way more minor! But you're getting on the right track with Sala Baker. And I should also mention that all of those are wrong

Orcrist
08-13-2004, 09:25 AM
Could "from the beginning of the end" mean the beginning of ROTK, since that is kind of like the end of the trilogy?

The Perky Ent
08-13-2004, 11:30 AM
It could...;)

Kath
08-14-2004, 07:54 AM
Well I found a guy called Jason Fitch who played Uruk2 in RotK, is it him?

The Perky Ent
08-14-2004, 10:24 AM
Nope. Beginning of the End is a big hint! And it's a really, really, really minor.

Morsul the Dark
08-14-2004, 11:14 AM
bruce Hopkins

Gamling
in the movie it is a rather small part and he is there when Gandalf shows up, the beginning of the end of the corruption of Theoden

Sleepy Ranger
08-14-2004, 11:26 AM
Bret McKenzie..... Elf Escort at end of movie... supposedly Glorfindel

NightKnight
08-14-2004, 11:58 AM
Inkling - yeah, you're mistaken. ;) Sala Baker plays Sauron.

The Perky Ent
08-14-2004, 01:59 PM
Nope! Beginning of the end! BEGINNING!

NightKnight
08-14-2004, 06:06 PM
Wi Kuki Kaa, playing Ghan-Buri-Ghan?

The Perky Ent
08-14-2004, 08:46 PM
Actually, a little bigger. Think! Beginning! BEGINNING!

Gil-Galad
08-15-2004, 10:40 AM
That fat hobbit who always shows a sour face to Gandalf and the Hobbit quad

The Perky Ent
08-15-2004, 11:26 AM
The Beginning of the end. What happens at the beginning of the end! End being ROTK!

Sleepy Ranger
08-15-2004, 11:48 AM
Deagol....Thomas Robins...

The Perky Ent
08-16-2004, 02:08 PM
correct!

Sleepy Ranger
08-19-2004, 07:40 AM
Heres one,

who provided the war cries for the baddies at Helms Deep and how many were they? (approx.)

NightKnight
08-19-2004, 01:46 PM
Around 25,000 cricket fans.

Sleepy Ranger
08-19-2004, 01:50 PM
Thats correct. 25,000 Cricket fans.

NightKnight
08-19-2004, 01:54 PM
Who made the One Ring that was used in the movie?

(Hint: It wasn't Sauron ;))

Sleepy Ranger
08-19-2004, 01:58 PM
You have the same coloring book as me I see.

Jens Hansen

NightKnight
08-19-2004, 02:01 PM
The Tolkien Quiz Book, yes. ;)

And you're right. Please continue. :p

Sleepy Ranger
08-19-2004, 02:13 PM

Andrew Murray.. Nice guy

Samwise
08-19-2004, 03:23 PM
The Riders of Rohan?

The Perky Ent
08-19-2004, 06:22 PM

Samwise
08-19-2004, 07:03 PM
The Uruk-Hai?

rutslegolas
08-20-2004, 01:16 AM

Sleepy Ranger
08-20-2004, 03:08 AM
The Haradrim it is.
Take it away rutslegolas.

Sleepy Ranger
08-30-2004, 03:14 AM
Bump thread. Hey its your turn rutslegolas.
