We are doing The Hobbit trivia. That's LotR.

Eruwen
12-21-2002, 08:39 AM
Oh, I thought it meant it had to be about Hobbits. Cause the last question was from ROTK wasn't it? Ok, what's the deal?

TolkienGurl
12-21-2002, 09:52 AM
That last question had a little to do with The Hobbit because it asked what age Bilbo was when he set off on his journey. The rest of the question was from Rotk, though. So technically, that was not a good question to ask:

This is a thread strictly for trivia questions concerning The Hobbit. Knowledge of Tolkien's other works should not be necessary to answer any trivia in this thread.
quoth Musnud, the starter of this thread.

If you look at the rest of this thread, I'm pretty sure most of the questions are from The Hobbit.

Only trying to help! smilies/biggrin.gif

Liriodendron
12-21-2002, 04:20 PM
Yes, yes! Let's have a good question from "The Hobbit" ! smilies/biggrin.gif (somebody!)

Eruwen
12-22-2002, 01:56 PM
ok then...some one else can go because I havn't had time to think of a good question. And thanks, Tolkiengurl. Sorry I didn't know.

TolkienGurl
12-22-2002, 05:08 PM
I'll go! smilies/biggrin.gif

Whom does Gandalf wish were banished from this world?

It is from The Hobbit, so you need not search throughout all of Tolkien's works!

Eruwen: There's nothing to forgive! smilies/smile.gif

The Necromancer.

Beren87
01-01-2003, 08:33 PM
Well, its been a week and I know Im correct so Im going to just go.

For opening the barrels and checking to see why they were so heavy.

Beren87
01-01-2003, 09:40 PM
Yes, you are correct.

Lindolirian
01-01-2003, 09:42 PM
How does Beorn first learn of the arrival of Thorin and Co.?

Bruce MacCulloch
01-01-2003, 09:46 PM
The horses went to tell him of the arrival of strangers.

Lindolirian
01-01-2003, 09:47 PM
Correct, Bruce!

Bruce MacCulloch
01-01-2003, 11:34 PM
To what did Bilbo compare the bare patch on Smaug's chest?

hobbitlass
01-02-2003, 06:51 AM
Why there is a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail out of its shell!

Bruce MacCulloch
01-03-2003, 12:00 AM
Merely 'a snail out of its shell' would have sufficed. smilies/tongue.gif
Your turn.

hobbitlass
01-03-2003, 07:31 AM
I knew it was something about a snail, and since I had to look it up anyway, I decided to post it. smilies/biggrin.gif Now for mine....
Who was the last dwarf to set foot in Bag-end?

Thorin Oakenshield, I believe.

hobbitlass
01-04-2003, 07:35 AM
Nope, this one is a bit tricky.

Liriodendron
01-04-2003, 08:11 AM
Balin?

TolkienGurl
01-04-2003, 04:00 PM
Oh goodness. I was just thinking about the first chapter. I forgot Balin comes to visit! *sulks in corner* smilies/wink.gif I guess I'd better brush up on my Hobbit skills!

Lauren Barlow

01-04-2003, 07:24 PM
Liriodendron, you got it, your turn.
And Tolkiengurl, no sulking allowed! smilies/biggrin.gif

Liriodendron
01-04-2003, 10:53 PM
OK! smilies/smile.gif Where did old Carc and his wife live?

Russandol
01-05-2003, 11:40 AM
Above the guard-chamber of the look-out post on Ravenhill.

Liriodendron
01-05-2003, 07:56 PM
Well done Russandol! Welcome. You may ask the next question. smilies/smile.gif

Russandol
01-05-2003, 08:52 PM
Which troll had the talking purse?

Beren87
01-05-2003, 09:40 PM
I believe it was William.

Russandol
01-05-2003, 11:11 PM
You believe most correctly.

Beren87
01-06-2003, 06:07 AM
Ahh lovely.

What did Beorn "tease" Bilbo about the morning of the second day there?

Liriodendron
01-06-2003, 09:07 AM
His weight. "Little bunny is getting nice and fat again on bread and honey," smilies/smile.gif

Beren87
01-06-2003, 03:18 PM
Either that or his fear of the bears/orcs/etc would have worked.

Your turn Liriodendron.

Liriodendron
01-06-2003, 05:30 PM
All right......Hmmmm, What was Gandalf doing when he got the map (and key) of The Lonely Mountain from Thrain?

Lindolirian
01-06-2003, 05:36 PM
Meeting the Necromancer for tea, of course. He has a nasty habit of showing up for things like that, just ask Bilbo.

Now seriously. He was spying to see who the Necromancer really was. Sauron or a Nazgul, or just some random evil bad guy? It was of course Sauron.

Liriodendron
01-06-2003, 06:30 PM
I was looking for the specific words Gandalf used to describe his "spying". Sort of cute for a crotchety wizard. smilies/smile.gif

Lindolirian
01-06-2003, 07:10 PM
Ok, so he was finding things out as usual, and a nasty dangerous business it was too!

Liriodendron
01-06-2003, 07:26 PM
Yes, the wonderful "Finder Outer"! The next question belongs to you.

Lindolirian
01-06-2003, 07:34 PM
What languages does Gandalf claim to know (in the Hobbit only) other than the Common Speech?

hobbitlass
01-06-2003, 09:22 PM
I believe it was the wargs' (wolves) speech.

Lindolirian
01-07-2003, 04:26 PM
That is true, but it is only one language. More!

Liriodendron
01-07-2003, 05:49 PM
....."a great grey wolf. He spoke to them in the dreadful language of the Wargs. Gandalf understood it. Bilbo did not, but it sounded terrible to him",

Exactly what kind of "more" do you want! smilies/smile.gif smilies/confused.gif

Lindolirian
01-07-2003, 08:09 PM
Other languages he knows. From the Hobbit only!

Russandol
01-07-2003, 08:42 PM
I think he also understood the language of Bears.

I once saw him sitting all alone on the top of the Carrock at night watching the moon sinking towards the Misty Mountains, and I heard him growl in the tongue of bears; 'The day will come when they will perish and I shall go back!'

Liriodendron
01-07-2003, 10:22 PM
He knew the "correct" thing to say to an eagle! smilies/wink.gif

"May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks."

But the eagles are speaking the common tounge (I think!) smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/tongue.gif

hobbitlass
01-13-2003, 11:06 PM
It has been a couple of days and I really like this thread. Since I got the first (of many) correct answers, I'm going to go ahead and ask a question.
After the riddle competition had officially started, what idea was rather on Bilbo's mind?

Liriodendron
01-15-2003, 06:35 AM
Ha! Eating of course! That's the way Hobbits are! smilies/smile.gif

hobbitlass
01-20-2003, 12:03 AM
Ha-Ha, Yes as always. Except on this occasion Bilbo was afraid of being eaten.

Liriodendron
01-20-2003, 12:43 AM
So.......How many "grim" dwarves did Dain have with him?

Dain B.C
01-20-2003, 05:42 AM
I am thinking it is 500? Is that right Liriodendron?

Hi Dain BC! Yes, that's the correct number. Your turn to ask a question. smilies/smile.gif

Dain B.C
01-20-2003, 07:46 PM
Allright. Heres a similar sort of question:

What two weapons were each dwarf in Dain's army armed with?

Beren87
01-20-2003, 07:54 PM
Two-handed Mattocks and a short broad sword

Dain B.C
01-20-2003, 08:30 PM
Thats exactly right Beren! Your turn.

Beren87
01-20-2003, 09:38 PM
Wonderful! With my luck I'm going to end up giving one thats already been said.

How many of the men of Lake Town stayed the night with the Dwarves and Bilbo after rowing up the river to the Lonely Mt?

Russandol
01-21-2003, 06:47 AM
none and none!

Beren87
01-21-2003, 02:19 PM
AH! trickssssy.

Your turn.

Russandol
01-22-2003, 11:31 AM
What food did Bofur request from Bilbo during the meeting at Bag End ?

Liriodendron
01-22-2003, 12:08 PM
mince-pies and cheese?

Russandol
01-22-2003, 01:03 PM
Exactly.

Liriodendron
01-22-2003, 02:00 PM
Cool! smilies/cool.gif ....So, what did goblins go on raids for?

Russandol
01-22-2003, 04:13 PM
With the exception of Gandalf & Co. their usual purpose was to look for food & prisoners to work in their mines.

Liriodendron
01-22-2003, 09:49 PM
yes! food and slaves.....what horrible creatures! smilies/eek.gif Your turn for the next question again, Russandol

Russandol
01-23-2003, 03:22 PM
what gift did Bilbo present to the Elven King ?

Liriodendron
01-23-2003, 08:34 PM
A necklace of silver and pearls that Dain had given him at their parting. (I could have sworn I answered this a couple of hours ago! smilies/confused.gif )

Russandol
01-24-2003, 05:42 AM
It's not the most expansive of works is it? But of course, pearls are correct. Feel free to conjure up something really obscure smilies/tongue.gif

Liriodendron
01-24-2003, 03:30 PM
No! ha ha, I really meant a "posting" problem! But you are right, Coming up with a good question is more of a challenge than finding the answers! smilies/biggrin.gif (sometimes) smilies/smile.gif Well, here's something I always thought hilarious....Who was called a "descendant of rats"?

Pallando B.C
01-26-2003, 06:09 AM
Bilbo I think.

Liriodendron
01-26-2003, 11:47 AM
Yes! That is right. Do you recall who called him that, and why??? smilies/smile.gif

Beren87
01-26-2003, 12:08 PM
Thorin called him that 'cause he stole the Arkenstone. Bilbo took it quite well I think, smilies/biggrin.gif

Pallando B.C
01-26-2003, 07:01 PM
Extra points for Beren, but I think I will go.

After Bilbo and co. were rescued by the Eagles, the next day, what did Bilbo go to do when he woke up?

Entmoot
01-27-2003, 12:42 AM
Bilbo went to look at the time and put the kettle on. He thought he was home...

Pallando B.C
01-27-2003, 03:27 AM
Good job Entmoot!

Entmoot
01-27-2003, 03:44 AM
What were described as being too small for trolls?

Beren87
01-27-2003, 02:09 PM
The clothes hanging on the wall in the Troll's cave.

That one took me a bit to find as I kept reading the part before, forgetting about the cave.

Entmoot
01-27-2003, 07:14 PM
That is correct Beren

Beren87
01-27-2003, 07:16 PM

Liriodendron

Why did Thorin and company quit lighting "watch fires" in Mirkwood?

Hirilaelin
02-14-2003, 11:00 AM
"Although it was not yet very cold, they tried lighting watch-fires at night, but they soon gave that up. It seemed to bring hundreds of eyes all round them, though the creatures, whatever they were, were careful never to let their bodies show in the little flicker of the flames. Worse still it brought thousands of dark-grey and black moths, some nearly big as your hand, flapping and whirring round their ears. They could not stand that, nor the huge bats, black as top hats, either; so they gave up fires and sat at night and dozed in the enormous uncanny darkness."

I believe that is the answer you are looking for.

Hirilaelin
02-15-2003, 12:38 PM
Thank you, and sorry I took so long to post this question.

Very easy, as I'm quite drained of ideas: Which dwarf alerted the trolls to the presense of the reast of the dwarves?

Nilwen
02-16-2003, 08:03 AM
I think tha answer is Balin. Right in the middle of the fight up came Balin.....No sooner did Tom see Balin come into the light than he gave an awful howl. This is all after the trolls caght Bilbo and were fighting, but the first dwarve was Balin.

Hirilaelin
02-16-2003, 01:59 PM
Correct, your question Nilwen!

Nilwen
02-16-2003, 06:34 PM
What was the last thing Balin said to Bilbo?

Hirilaelin
02-16-2003, 07:51 PM
Do you perhaps mean Thorin? Anyway, the last thing that Balin said to Bilbo in the book was...

"The new Master is of wiser kind,' said Balin, "and very popular, for, of course, he gets most of the credit for the present prosperity. They are making songs which say that in his day the rivers run with gold."

If you meant Thorin...

"No!" said Thorin. "There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more men valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!"

Hiri smilies/smile.gif

How many giant spiders were there when the dwarves got caght?

Hirilaelin

Would that be four? I assumed that you were talking about when the spiders were talking about the strung-up dwarves.

Nilwen
02-17-2003, 04:41 AM
Yes.Go.

Hirilaelin
02-17-2003, 12:14 PM
All right. What did Thorin say to Bilbo that he later repented?

Beren87
02-17-2003, 01:02 PM
That they (the dwarves) should give him little of the treasure 'cause he was no longer their friend (squabbling little dwarves are like children, honestly).

Hirilaelin
02-17-2003, 06:52 PM
Yes, dwarves can be very petty indeed. Your question!

Beren87
02-17-2003, 07:07 PM
How many dwarves decided upon a direction the day after they were attacked by the spiders?

Hirilaelin, please read the Quiz Room Rules (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=000386). We give ten days before we move on, and that applies to all threads in the Quiz Room.

I don't know if 8 is the answer Beren87 is looking for, but here is where I got it:
The day after the battle with the spiders Bilbo and the dwarves made one last despairing effort to find a way out before they died of hunger and thirst. They got up and staggered on in the direction which eight out of the thirteen of them guessed to be the one in which the path lay;...
Chapter 9: Barrels Out of Bond

It says "eight out of the thirteen of them" not "eight dwarves" so it a little iffy.

Hirilaelin

Sorry. I'll try to be less impatient in the future. But, I agree with wass_up66. Sorry again!

all right, but i really thought that was the answer.... know i'm all confused! and I don't think that any dwarf had a silver hood with light blue tassel. counld have sworn so...

Then they hung up two yellow hoods and a pale green one; and also a sky-blue one with a long silver tassel. This one belonged to Thorin, an enormously important dwarf...

Hoods: dark green (Dwalin), scarlet (Balin), 2 blue (Fili and Kili), 2 purple (Dori and Nori), grey (Ori), brown (Oin), white (Gloin), 2 yellow (Bifur and Bofur), pale green (Bombur), sky-blue with a long silver tassel (Thorin).
This is from the long expected party, I don't remember any other dwarf hood colors being discussed. Did Dain's crew wear colored hoods? I just remember mention of weapons and armour type garb! I think you two are on to something! smilies/smile.gif

I'm still confused.... But anyway, my question.

Who serves the guests at Beorn's home?

Beren87
03-03-2003, 04:44 PM
Ponies, Dogs, Sheep, and a Ram!

Hirilaelin
03-03-2003, 07:11 PM

Beren??? Oh where for art thou Beren? We need a new question! Anyone?

Pallando B.C
03-13-2003, 07:16 PM
If you read this (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=000406) thread, you will understand why Beren can't continue his threads.

At what stage in The Hobbit a hidden rock mentioned.

Hirilaelin
03-13-2003, 08:04 PM
Thank you Pallando, for both the answer and the question. As for the answer...

Would it be with the trolls? I'm thinking not... Well, here's my other guess. The hidden rock door? I really have no clue. Must read the book again!

Pallando B.C
03-13-2003, 09:42 PM
That's quite alright. but no that's not the right answer.

Sorry for my terrible english before, the question should read.

At what stage in The Hobbit was a Hidden Rock mentioned.

Liriodendron
03-13-2003, 09:56 PM
Would that be the rock Bilbo trips over when running from Gollum? It's refered to as a "snag in the floor", so I guess not! smilies/rolleyes.gif Hmmmmm

Malva Headstrong
03-14-2003, 10:35 AM
In the Tollīs Lair, when itīs said, that Sting, Glamdring and Orcrist are from Gondolin?

Pallando B.C
03-15-2003, 05:49 AM
Nice guess, Liriodendron, but Malva Headstrong has the right answer.

By Hidden Rock, I meant Gondolin. Your Go!

Hirilaelin
03-31-2003, 03:24 PM
Malva, are you there? Or anywhere for that matter...

Beren87

Okay I'm grabbing!

Which riddle proved to be a nasty poser for Gollum?

elven maiden Earwen
04-02-2003, 10:38 PM
one green eye says hi to one red eye or something like that. the one about the flowers in the sun.

Firondoiel
04-03-2003, 01:50 PM
Gollum did have a little trouble with that one, but that's not the "nasty poser".

alaklondewen
04-03-2003, 03:44 PM
I believe this is what you are looking for.

A box without hinges, key, or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid,

And of course "Eggses" is the answer.

Firondoiel
04-03-2003, 06:04 PM
Yup! That's what I'm looking for! Carry on!

Welcome to the Barrow Downs Lady Dakai! I'm sorry but it's alaklondewen's turn because she(?) answered the last question. You can check out the Quiz Room rules here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=000386). Have fun posting and discussing Tolkien's works!

alaklondewen

When Bilbo is conversing with Smaug and names himself 'The Barrel Rider,' what does Smaug suggest this means?

Gee, this'll take you guys like a second!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress

He thinks Bilbo is one of the Lakemen, from Esgaroth.

Arwen_Evenstar
04-16-2003, 06:18 PM
Um..well he does think that...but that is not his explanation for the title 'barrel-rider'....try again...and a back-up quote would be good. smilies/smile.gif

The Saucepan Man
04-16-2003, 06:57 PM
Having just read that very chapter to my daughter this evening, I think I can oblige.

Maybe barrel was your pony's name; and maybe not, though it was fat enough.

So, he thought it might have meant rider of a fat pony. smilies/biggrin.gif

And what a fantastic chapter that is. It was great to read it again. smilies/smile.gif

But, Galion was his name.

It was Gandalf who was cloaked and hooded as an old man.

Finwe

No one showed it to him, he saw it himself.

(I'm wondering if this is a trick question.)

Liriodendron
05-26-2003, 06:21 PM
Now Finwe, I would never ask a "trick" question! smilies/wink.gif A specific, and interesting "someone" literally "showed" the Arkenstone to Thorin! smilies/smile.gif

By "to the left of the front door", I mean from the perspective of standing in the Hall looking at the front door.

Hint: the answer that I am thinking of is not to be found in the text, although it is an "official" source. smilies/evil.gif
