Rune, Galadriel actually checks in often. Trust me. I have an ambition to beat her in posts under the G's. So far, she's winning.
Edit- I just looked and I just realised that I have actually passed her!! YAY!!

And she still has to reclaim the "the Thunder Mistress" part of her name from Gil-galad... :(
Just for information, she did contact me shortly after that WW gameand she was having a hectic time in real life - clearly things may not have got better but I think she has checked in since..

I'm touched that someone missed me. :) But Glirdan is right, I have school and work and just haven't gotten much time to come on. I'm hoping that I'll be able to come on more once summer comes along. Maybe even this week(since its the march brake).
I miss you all to!

I just noticed that today is burra's 22nd birthday. Now there is someone I haven't seen in an age and a day.

Ith- I'm hoping that you didn't just come on the BD for a few days and then leave again.
Well, hehe... I suppose I did. Life is distracting. I did want to come back and say hi to old friends and perhaps meet some new people (since I'm sure there are many).
A lot of things have changed. I'm graduating and going to Boise State University next year, and planning on a master's degree in American Sign Language following a baccalaureate in some subject that only God knows for the time being. I'm also getting married on (tentatively) June 2, 2007. I know we're young, but we are very very happy together. I've discovered a love and somewhat of an affinity for jazz singing, and I hope to pursue that through college at least.
I still remember all the great people here at the Downs, and I regret becoming too busy to spend time here in the first place, even though such obstacles will probably continue. How is everyone? I see the site has changed quite a bit, and it looks nice.
I look forward to seeing you all again.
Namaarië,

Hello, everybody. I used to frequent this site like I was being paid to, but alas, it has been 4 long years since I've posted regularly. I'm afraid to say that I haven't kept up; I'd probably have to re-read both the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion in order to properly participate in discussions here again. I just wanted to say hello to all the members who've been around since 2002 or earlier (I recognize many of you!) as well as "Hi! I'm Jessica! Nice to meet you!" to the ones I haven't met. It has been too long, and I've missed you all, this site, being on fire for Tolkien, everything! I hope everyone's been well, and I'll continue to lurk obscurely until I perhaps find a post that my rusty brain can handle :)

Does anybody know what happened to Finwe? And did Perky Ent leave or get banned? It was a surprise not to see his name on the Member's List... I remember him from the Quiz Room.
Looking back over this thread makes me feel very old-- I joined the 'Downs right after it (the thread) started way back in 2002, under another name. And yet there are members listed here who were gone before I ever set mouse here.

I miss Perky, too. Last I recall, he was having a delimma over picking his PT. He's got one now, I see, but he's not been around much since then.
AndGarin, I've also missed. I hope he can come back soon, maybe join in a WW game again.
This may be a surprise to most of you, but I'd like to see Loki back. I know that was a rather bad situation around him, but he brought a certain... initiative that I sort of liked. And he certainly made things interesting.

I must also agree to both Gurthang and Morm about Loki.
But even as I myself know that my own way of playing WW is not something everyone appreciates, I still think he (?!) could have made it better with a bit softer or more modest approach...
Sometimes something is just too much when one clearly states that all the others are only stupid and ignorant fools (even though the one who says this seems to be intelligent enough).
It's called bad manners or something. You natives know it better what to call it...

I also really miss Garin. We still haven't gotten our chance to pay SpM back for that WW game. :p
As for Loki, none of us really got to know him to well, but I'd very much like too. Like you've all said, he's got a lot of potential.
Oh, Mith, thanks for letting us know about Ang. I sent him a PM to do for an interview for ME Idol after his elimination and I was wondering why I never got it back.

I knew where Ang was/is and I still miss him. And not just because he makes a spectacular Tom Felton in my ATM2. Because ever since he framed me Day 1 of the very first WW game and set the stage for Kuru's spectacular coup, I've become attached. Working with him so closely in Island of Sorrow... enlisting his aid for my own RP... beating each other senseless via wolvery... my long-standing belief that he looks like Antonio Bandares...
Anguirel, come back to us!
And Aman... the first 'Downer to welcome me. She spotted my name on the newly registered spot and PMed me. And that truly amazing duel in the Gauntlet Tavern that one time... I miss her.
Really, I miss the phantom. I'll admit it. I know that he lurks, but I haven't spotted a post in ages. My darling, my dear, how are we supposed to keep the rumors alive if you disappear like this?

It sort of lost it's appeal to me as a lot of those people weren't around as much. And Nilp. Apparently he's been around some but he hasn't posted much.I still miss Kransha. There's so many people who used to be active but are away (for different reasons, some known, some unknown to me and who have been for periods of different length) or very inactive and I miss them. :(
Come back spawn, Nilp, Valier, Naria, Jenny, Ang and Roa! And Eonwe, Wilwa, Fordim, malkatoj and tar-ancalime too. (I know some of you have just too much RL stuff going on right now and some others might have lost interest with this forum or don't feel home at here anymore, but...)
And then there's a bunch of 'downers who I only see around in livejournal these days. I wouldn't mind seeing them actively posting here.

The day before yesterday I spent time reding the Dueling Wizards ww-thread and it made me quite sad, because there were so many "lost" people playing and they were so great, for example Gurth the Good Wizard...

Although we had more differences of opinion than agreements, I am sorry that the Saucepan Man isn't around very much anymore. But there are also new people coming in - ones to become the household names and to become ones like those left. Like life it means coming and going; birth, blossoming and waning.
It leaves one with a quiet sadness of losing a friend but also with joy of meeting new people as a prospect of new friends.

Hi Pio, my apologies for not being able to answer you earlier - have been stuck in a country with the family (went for vacation ere all this began) and only just managed to get out through lanes and by-roads. Excuse the brevity of the message as well - connection is erratic, better send a short message then find myself unable to send one at all. All three comparably (say, to this morning's conditions) safe and surely sound. Hope it won't get worse than that.

I greatly miss the elder days here at the Barrow Downs - not that there's anything wrong with the new days! But I miss some of the old ghouls who haunted the Downs long ago. Theodred21, who became a friend in real life - after posting here he started his own board and invited me and two other Downers to join. A great deal of my life centered around that forum, Rohan, and this one that brought us together. Eldarion and Steadfast Sam were those other two. Sam has since joined the army, been there and back again. I don't know how Eldarion is but we hear from him now and then. Telchar is another familiar name from the quiz rooms! Garin had some major things in life come up. I'm not sure if he will be coming back anytime soon but if I speak to him again, which may be soon I'll let him know he is missed.
I should have done this a long time ago, but for those who knew him, Garin or Craig, lost his battle with alcoholism a few months ago and died. The last 2 years were very difficult for him and he had pushed his body to the point of no return. For those interested his friend wrote this memorial (http://www.thesamedame.com/2008/08/craig-froehlich-1971-2008.html). I'm sure it would make Garin extra happy if next time you play WW you were extra brash and abrasive.:)

Wow! I've been missed! That's cool! But that post is 2 years old so I imagine no one even remembers me now. I have missed all my old friends here at the BD but life marches on.
I've been through many changes in the last few years. I spent a few years caring for my grandparents, Granny died in '04 and Grandpa just this September.
I now own the home I continually wearied your ears (or eyes, I suppose) telling you I so longed for (renting's the pits!).
After 14 years as a stay-at-home mom I went back to work a year ago. I work at an elementary school and love it.
My oldest graduated high school and is going to college-that thought took a lot of getting used to.
How are all of you? Mark12:30 (Helen) and I have remained close friends despite the miles and the years I've been away form the Downs. We see each other every few years ,no thanks to me. As many times and she has traveled to see me in Lothlorien, I have never been to Hobbiton to see her.

This is now the fourth day in a row that I've peeked in at the Downs (and using my own account too, rather than lurking as a guest...)
Perhaps it's time to roll up my sleeves and start a really good dust-up of some sort?
Gandalf: amoral manipulator or uncaring angelic guardian?
Smaug: was he really all that bad?
Gollum's "Slip" at the Crack of Doom: it just doesn't make sense!

Gosh, it's been centuries since I last visited the Downs... not that I ever did much when I was here. I'm in the middle of a marathon extended edition movie watch-a-thon at the moment and I just had to come back and see the place, post a few mutterings. I shall have to make some Mirth while I'm here, for old times sake.
And yes, I still hold a candle for Denethor. Carefully.

Let's see...
Fea and Lush are still quite active. HI pokes his head in here from time to time. The Chief Wight may be seen occasionally, but he never posts anymore. :(

I'm already missing lucyyenic. She was only with us a few hours... she only made two posts... and yet she managed to bring so much joy into our lives.
I was reading the "Unifinished tales of Numenor and Middle-earth" when I was asked if I could paint something calssical, without fat people, blood, or other strange things involved. So here we have Amroth, King of Lorien and Nimrodel, somwhere in the Fangorn Forrest.
I´m not sure about the quality of the pic, since it´s a pretty huge and had to be photographed. Originally it´s watercolor

Alas, poor yenic. I knew her, Nerwen . . . well actually I didn't. As a matter of fact, I'm the one what did her in. So, apologies to all for depriving the 'Downs of such a luminous presence. 'Fair as an Elf-child she was, but briefer, alas!'

There is either something rather weird or rather sad about how self-referential this thread has become in recent...years. :( (Oh the cruelty of time.)
I was reading through some *really* old threads (from the days before I joined) while waiting around at work today and it prompted me to notice that HerenIstarion hasn't posted since early this year.
Also, my former REB cohort Diamond18 hasn't posted in a year almost to the day.
And thinking of her put me in mind of another mighty colleague of REB fame, Rimbaud who has not posted since '08.

I was reading through some of the old werewolf games at work today and on an impulse clicked on the profile of Feanor of the Peredhil and saw that she hasn't posted since June 27, 2012. She will always have a special place in my heart for how her weird behavior let me achieve a remarkable come from behind win in the first Downs werewolf game.
And speaking of werewolf, the mighty Phantom himself hasn't posted since December of last year...of course, in these latter days that might not count as being gone long enough to qualify as an absence.
And I must also mention Anguirel who hath not posted since August 2011.

Since it's her birthday today, I wonder - does anybody have a clue what's become of Ibrîniđilpathânezel? She was the first I thought of inviting back to the Downs after the Reanimation, since I still had her website (once home of wonderful Tolkien-inspired music) bookmarked, but alas! It's defunct, and checking her profile I found her last post here was back in 2011.

One has to wonder how many of these souls are quite literally dead. I know on The One Ring and Tolkien Forums there are memorial threads for members who passed away.

I've wondered about that also. It would seem pretty easy for the Downers connected to others via social media platforms to stay informed on one another's welfare.
With those (like me) who aren't active on FB, Twitter, etc., it's more problematic.

"Pretty easy," aye, but not perfect. People flee Facebook eventually, Twitter has no 'Downsian group--just a smattering of mutual follows, LiveJournal is long since dead (at least among my generation of Downers), and who can say of other social media sites?
In other words, take away the forum and there would no longer be any central place. Sorry news, if there were any, would probably spread, but like a game of telephone across various platforms.
(Which, to take things sideways, is kind of a beautiful story-germ, but not mercifully not the present situation.)
