My eight favorite personal titles -

The Barrow-Wight's "Night in Wight Satin". He changed this about the time I was listening to that song nonstop.
Hookbill the Goomba's "Alive without breath". It's so obviously Tolkien, you might not think of that as LotR yet when you see it, it's so obviously LotR and Barrow-downish as well.
Hilde Bracegirdle's "Relic of Wandering Days". It bespeaks of depth and history, very like LotR I think.
A tie between Dancing Spawn's "Mischevious Candle" Kalimac's "Candle of the Marshes", and Symestreem's "Face in the Water", because "The Dead Marshes" is one of the awesomest chapters in LotR.
Lalwendë's "A Mere Boggart". It's cool.
Almost forgot Kitanna's "Child of the West". Reminds me of Thorin's deathbed speech, when he called Bilbo "Child of the kindly West".

You might also appreciate Kalimac's "Candle of the Marshes." One of my favorites. Alas, it's been far too long since Kalimac graced this board.

I love all the new PTs, but my favorite of the bunch has to be Meela's. No one else could have that PT. ;)

*blushes*

If our beloved Barrow-Wight would see the deletion of my personal title as a possibility, I'd have nothing against you taking it in my stead some day. I've developed somewhat of a distaste for labelling myself. 'Untitled' seems the best title I can think of anymore.

Not that I have anything against Rune :D, but it just wouldn't be the same if it belonged to someone else. :/

To help those to choose a favorite title, I've created a list of all members with PTs. This way, everyone can see different members' titles, even those who have long since disappeared. So many of these titles are creative and wonderful and it's nice to be able to see them all. :)

-- Folwren

Well in Noldorian terms choosing a PT is Essecilme and if you can not decide I would sugest waiting since it is unchangeable. You will surely know the right one when it occurs (lámatyáve) - yep I have been reading Morgoth's ring again... ;) .

For myself, when I daydreamed of what I would choose, I knew I wanted a quotation since I was a literature student and my screen name does not lend itself to some of the superb puns that some people have and I did not have the wit to think of someof the ones that reference Tolkien like "Drummer in the Deep" or "Alive without breath" which is just so perfect for a wight!!! I did want a supernatural element too so I ended up with short list of 3 one of which was taken (and it is much more appropriate for it's holder). So it was either Pilgrim Soul or Bewildering Ghost. The latter more accurate, the former more aspirational. I could almost translate Pilgrim soul into Elvish but didn't incase it wasn't an accurate translation. Pretentious and ungrammatical is a bad combination..... I try to limit myself to one or the other at any given time..... ;)

So basically, try to find something that means something to you, or amuses you and which you live with for the rest of your death (in a manner of speaking).

I've updated the list and added about a dozen members/PTs I missed. Eighty-one pages of members....I guess I was bound to miss some.

Anyways, my ultimate favorite PTs are Aylwen's "Melody of Misery," Dwarin's "Khazad-Doomed," Guinevere's "Banshee of Camelot," Encaitare's "Bittersweet Symphony," Orofaniel's "Mighty Mouse of Mordor," and Nerindel's "Spirited Weaver of Fates."

Just looking at the list, I see so many great titles- it was hard to choose only a few....

Shady is not meant to be anything rapper-like, as you guessed... (though, what's the problem with Thin-Lo being a rapper; that's not so very far from it...) It just sounds a bit undeadish and refers to me in werewolf games... :D

Hooky...Now you can just put "Formendacil" as the slogan, and everyone will know what you're talking about. And at least Formy will think it's hilarious.

I've just changed it for the week I'm doing at the moment. It now reads "Dead Good".

Wish I'd chose that as a Personal Title.

I'm still kind of wondering what, exactly, is the sort of thing that would prompt the giving out of a personal title.

The first prerequisite is a minimum of 500 posts. From the Forum FAQ thread (top of the N&N forum main page):
When you become a Ghost Prince, you will be eligible for a personally selected title.
Next requirement is that those posts make a significant positive contribution to the forum: The best way to get an invitation to select a personal title is to distinguish yourself by making meaningful contributions to the forum. The reputation level of a member is a factor that can recommend her/him for a personal title, and of course the recommendations of the various forum moderators. One more thing you may have noticed: personal titles are usually given in bunches, not singly.

Anguirel

Folwren, Byronic comes from the Great Romantic Poet George Gordon, Lord Byron. It's basically come to mean "devil-may-care debonair defiance" kind of thing. "Brand" means a sword, so it's appropriate enough for me...

Mith, no? I must strive harder!

Mithalwen
09-02-2006, 05:26 AM

Yes, I did. Thank you. I was torn between Prisoner of Hope or Messenger of Hope, so I went up to ask Mom.

"Mom. . .are we prisoners of hope?"

She gave me a rather quizicle look. "I don't know. Maybe."

Well, thought I, I guess that would work. A moment later: "Mom. . .Are we messengers of hope?"

"I hope so!" was her very immediate answer.

And so it came about, though I still deliberated for a few days after that. :)

I looked it up in some FAQs, but couldn't find anything. When you have 500 posts the BW can decide you deserve one and when or if he sees fit, he sends you a PM asking would you like to have one.

Eeks...how exciting this is! I was wondering when more BDers would get PTs as it's been awhile. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone chooses. :)

Exactly how do you get a title?
I believe you have to have at least 500 posts and make a significant contribution to the forum (in quality, not just quantity). Usually members who receive a PT have been around for at least a year, though that's not always the case.

How do I get a personal title?

The best way to get an invitation to select a personal title is to distinguish yourself by making meaningful contributions to the forum. Here are some fast ways to NOT get a title:
Pester BW or the other moderators for one.
Quickly pump up your post count by posting anywhere and everywhere with low or no-content posts and topics.

Generally the requirment also consists of having 500 posts but some exceptions can be made as in the case of Naria as she was close to 500. It is true that you need to make yourself a name as a meaningful contributor to the forum, and at least fairly well known to an admin or mod.

And many felicitations to all the new recipients, they are well earned and deserved.

So was I, so extatic that I learned to jump sillily for a dance I should learn. :D

I too have been bestowed the honor of having a personal title!!! I cannot believe it!! and to top it off I will get mine at the same time as some of my favorite Downer'sHeheh, I don't think it's politically correct to say so, but I agree!

Just noticed this:

Estelyn Telcontar
Princess of Skwerlz

Ah yes - my old title was lost in the forum's recent update and in the replacement process, I was allowed to change it. "Ghosted" no longer applies, since my internet access is now stable - and I rarely have time to chat nowadays anyway. So the "Princess" stayed with the addition of what I appear to be most associated with... ;)

Valier, don't rush the decision, like a tattoo, it is not a decision you can change so you must be happy with it and be confident you can live with it. I am fairly sure that it isn't a time limited offer. Do you want to be defined by werewolf?

Naria, Elusive fire is good or maybe sub in spirit for maiden?

Someone suggested "untitled" once like a modern artwork..that was clever .

I like Macalaure's Fading Fëanorion and Legate's A Voice That Gainsayeth - there is a very MEish feel to both of them. And Volo's Silver in My Silent Heart sounds like it could be from Nightwish's lyrics, whether that be good or bad. ;)

I agree Mith, I am not sure I should go with a ww title, since I haven't been an overly active wwer. I will not be hasty....:p I am sure something will come to me.:D I'm just so dang indecisive and impatient at the same time...what a combo:rolleyes:

I will not be hasty....:p I am sure something will come to me.:D I'm just so dang indecisive and impatient at the same time...what a combo:rolleyes:Take your time Valier! At the last round I was probably the last to come up with my PT. I had a lots of ideas but they all felt somewhat vague or not just what I thought the PT should be. But when it at last came to me it was quite clear it was exactly what I wanted.

So don't take a PT which you don't feel like "That's it!" because you need to live with it from that moment on. If you don't feel something is right then drop it and wait for the next good idea. You'll recognise the one then. And you should believe it as I myself was quite sceptical about this "you'll recognise the one when you cross it" -idea but in the end I really did even if it took some time...

And just my suggestion to you: Valier, I still think that "Fey Feline Fée Fatale" sounds awesome. Just make it simple... Feline Fatale, or Fatal feline... or this nice one Fey Fatale?

Thanks, Lommy & Legate! I'll admit - 'mellifluous' has not, heretofore, been part of my active vocabulary. I found it looking through a dictionary for adjectives which alliterate with "Maia". I liked the allusion to either Melian or Saruman, depending on how you want to take it - moral ambiguity suits me. *wicked grin*

Good choices, my fellow newly-knighted Downers!

From my part I can only say that at first sight it looks extremely corny, at second sight you understand that it might actually be somehow BD-related, at the third sight you think that it sounds pretty good and at the fourth you don't even notice it.

I leave the meaning completely to your imagination and will try not to comment it like Lommy's imagination.

I like Elusive Fire very much. It's mysterious, evocative, and has a nice sound.

For Valier, I'm a fan of Feline Fay/Fée or Fey Feline... keeping it simple gives it more impact, I think. Oh, wait, can't it also be spelt "fae"? (Not to throw another spelling in the works...)

I'm curious about the thought process behind Legate's and Volo's (since TM already gave us his.)
Well, I went through several ideas for a PT in my head, but as it happens to me more often, the right one popped up in my mind with no actual connotations. Though, in this case, it was something that already had strong place in my heart and that I always liked. For those who don't know, the title comes from one passage in Tuor's story, when Ulmo speaks to him:
And Ulmo spoke to Tuor of Valinor and its darkening, and the Exile of the Noldor, and the Doom of Mandos, and the hiding of the Blessed Realm. "But behold!" said he, "in the armour of Fate (as the Children of Earth name it) there is ever a rift, and in the walls of Doom a breach, until the full-making, which ye call the End. So it shall be while I endure, a secret voice that gainsayeth, and a light where darkness was decreed. Therefore, though in the days of this darkness I seem to oppose the will of my brethren, the Lords of the West, that is my part among them, to which I was appointed ere the making of the World."
I always liked Ulmo, and I always liked this part, and there are other things that I'll leave to your imagination and interpretation.

Legate, when I saw your earlier post I wished I had time to take your advice - that would have been glorious. Oh well.. *sigh*
995th post!
Well, look at it from the better side - your most glorious moment still awaits you and now you don't need to worry about having or not having the title when it comes :)

I leave the meaning completely to your imagination and will try not to comment it like Lommy's imagination.
Well, to me it gave the impression of a very poetic title - and also pressing upon me the idea of you as soft and dreamy person. ;)

Thanks to everyone who likes my title. :) I thought it sounded nice and fitted very well to the image of Maglor wandering the world while gradually fading through the Ages.

Rune, I hope I won't scare you now, too, but I also like Norseman of the Apocalypse best. For Valier I'm voting for Feline Fatale, for Naria Elusive Flame.
*expects his opinion to be blatantly ignored* :p

My all-time favourite titles are Laconic Loreman, Alive without breath, A Mere Boggart, Drummer in the Deep, Night in Wight Satin, and Corpus Cacophonus. One doesn't even have to add their real screen names: their titles fit so perfectly and stick so much, they've become almost synomymous with their bearers.
Going through Brinn's list, I also like Hobbitus Emeritus (Gilthalion) and Scent of Symbelmyne (Sophia) very much.

Oh how I wanted to ignore this post. . .but I am too kind.
Norseman of the Apocalypse is not a title I consider, why would I use a biblical term?

I was considering Mariner of the Nothern Seas or Broadsword/Thunderbolt of the North and a few other ones.

I was considering Mariner of the Nothern Seas or Broadsword/Thunderbolt of the North and a few other ones.

The Odinic Wanderer still sounds the best to me. Mariner also does not sound too bad. In the last one, I would choose rather Broadsword than Thunderbolt, but still, being you, I'd choose one of the former two.

Anyway, don't let other people meddle into it much, and choose something you know you'll like and that you'd be comfortable with anytime even in the future.

I hasten to point out that the phrase 'Horsemen of the Apocalypse' appears nowhere in the Bible. In fact, the word apocalypse isn't there either. These are simply words taken on by commentators, presumably in the Middle Ages. It is in no way a 'Biblical term'. ;)

I hasten to point out that you are not exactly right, Hookbill. The word "apocalypse" is used once at the very beginning of the, ahem, Apocalypse ;) Or, to be clear: the word "apocalypse" is used at the beginning of certain writing, which was later named "THE Apocalypse" (eventually the Apocalypsis of John, etc.) because of this word. It is the very starting word of the writing, "apokalypsis" in original, translated "revelation". And that's also what "apocalypsis" means, regardless of what today's people imagine under it (generally it is catastrophe, for reasons unknown, as the central message of the Revelation, or any apocalyptic literature, certainly is not any catastrophe). But yes, under these terms, no reason for Rune to call himself "Norseman of Revelation", unless he wants to be often a Seer in WW (or be a wolf and reveal himself as one ;) :D ).

Well, sorry if I made a mistake. . .but to me Apocalypse is conected with the Juda-Christian writings.

Now to answer the question of yet another anonymous neg-repper!

I do not wish to use a term that to me is connected with christianity if there is other words just as good because I am not Christian. . .I am an Atheist!

So it is not something I do because I dislike Christianity more than the other great religions.

Poor Rune.... I laughed so much when I saw Norseman of the Apocalypse but because I too associate it with the Bible I thought some might think its use, not blasphemous exactly but flippant perhaps or a little disrespectful. However it never occured that anyone could think NOT using it would be insulting ....

I believe since the system has been resetted, it got a little shuffled and now everyone can rep with more or less same weight. Anyway, I'd say we leave the topic - whoever it was, it is on him now to sort it out. And everyone can make a mistake or in some affect do a neg-rep - that's not our concern, only that person's and Rune's.

Hmm, does all this negative repping mean that Rune is a Dread Norseman?

(Actually, I guess that sounds too similar to Mister Underhill's PT.

Would you consider using something with the word "spectre" in it, Rune? That fits in with a ghoulish Downs theme as well as incorporating an allusion to another writer favoured by you.

Sorry, I'm sitting here laughing about Norseman Of The Apocalypse now. Why? It's like a great Monty Python sketch that never was...I can see it now...Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle and Michael Palin, dim figures riding in the mist while havoc is being wreaked around them involving demons and ladies of Babylon and whatnot - they come into view with those outfits on they had for the comic Vikings in the "Spam" sketch. "Weeee are the Four Norsemen of the Apocalypse!"

Wow, I'm feeling all classy now. Good choices by the way, folks!

Thanks! I really like yours too! Funny thing, I've considered a few titles with the words "leaf" and "lady". I'm glad I didn't pick them! Otherwise, we would clash! :D

Great new titles everyone! And there are more comming, I think.

I might be one of the few Downers who never gave her PT a thought (apart from coming up with Lommy's Pet Dwarf, which she thinks I should choose), so I'm open to preferably sinister, bawdy and/or violent suggestions.

Greenie, your new title is very stimulating.

PS. Galadriel55, you know your PT will become a topic of some discussion this Tolkien Reading Day!

Will you and I be discussing while the others are trying to figure out what we are talking about? ;)

Lommy's Pet Dwarf

^.^ Better than Boro's Dance Partner :D

But, seriously, I think that "dancer" fits you nicely. Water Dancer is the first thing that came into my head, but that's a wrong mythology. Dancing Lioness? :p

preferably sinister, bawdy and/or violent suggestions

Bloodthirsty Devil.

:D
Yeah no, I think I'll skip that one as well. ;)

I am currently toying with some Thuringwethil/Ungoliant/balrog ideas, but I'm far from decided. Thanks for the suggestions, O Lady of Dwimordene.

Agan, yours should be The Whisperer In Darkness, The Thing On the Doorstep, or Death From Above. ;)

Galadriel55
03-08-2012, 04:35 PM
I am glad to be of service, O Unnamed Horror. ;) (Hmm... maybe you want to be a Namless Thing? :p)

Balrog:

A Winged Balrog
Fire of Moria
Demon of Power

Ungoliant:

Weaver of Shadow/Darkness
Bane of the Trees
Daughter of Unlight
Everlasting Lust

Yeah, those are more about them than containing them... No ideas with Thuringwethil yet.

Edit: xed with Zil who has much better suggestions (actually!) But it's all up to Agan in the end. :)

Inziladun

Alternately for Agan, Gleefully Grisly or Nebulous Nightwind / Nightmare.

Based on your old avatar, why not just have:

I keep thinking of the Nidhoggr, the wyrm that gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil. And the un-named things that live in the roots of Middengeard...

Everlasting Lust

I think we pretty much have a winner....

Sorry, wrong mythology...

Now just imagine an über-cute photo of applauding skwerlz...

Would this meet with your approval, Ms. Telcontar?

Mwa ha ha. You brought the banana; you will have to deal with cross-discussing. :D

Mwa ha ha. You brought the banana; you will have to deal with cross-discussing. :D

And I intend to bring another one to Reading Day. Plus, the banana already became part of the moot silliness - and you're partially to blame. :p:D

And to keep this on topic...-ish (or that skwerl will suddenly stop being cute!), here's a list with Thuringwethil-related things:

Secret Shadow
Death on Wings
Flight of Darkness
Tidings of Death (this one is also referencing to Faramir's line about Boromir's death - how tidings of death have many wings...)

Inziladun
03-08-2012, 10:08 PM
Or the whimsical Dreadfully Delightful, or maybe Capricious Cougar. :)

03-09-2012, 12:28 AM
Biter.

There's always Pixiediculous. ;)

Wielder of Isildur and Mim

Karhu-Muna

Permanently Prepared

Devourer of All Things / Slays King, Ruins Town

Vicious Vixen

Creepy Crawly

Legate of Amon Lanc

Agan, yours should be The Whisperer In Darkness, The Thing On the Doorstep, or Death From Above. ;)
Totally wrong mythos ;) By the way, were these three supposed to refer to the aforementioned Thuringwethil-Ungoliant-Balrog? Respectively??? (points at the latest)

Everlasting LustI think we pretty much have a winner....
Yes, that looks pretty much convincing. However,

Karhu-Muna
is my favourite this far :)

Biter.
I think she possibly wouldn't mind even Biter and Beater, for that matter.

Ungoliant-related still, the "Mistress of Her Own Lust" is probably too long, is it? Otherwise, I can't think right now of anything similar from the mythos. But the one pointed above by G55 I think is related enough.

I like Beater and Biter. Maybe Devouring Fire as well, or, on the "teeth" motif, We Has Only Six. :p

I don't get what's all the "wrong mythos" stuff about. Is that a reference to some other fantasy book?

Playng with Everlasting Lust, you can get Everlasting and Everlusting, or something like Ever Thirsting Never Drinking - though that one might be too close to Hooky's Alive Without Breath.

Wow, what a nice surprise. And nice choices everybody!

Agan: Lascivious Lioness? But I must say I like Biter and Beater as well.

Greenie, your new title is very stimulating.
You know, this sounds as if it was Leafy Lettuce.:p

I want you to know that I love all your suggestions! If Lommy was home, she'd probably be wondering why I'm chuckling alone in my room.

However, I'm also letting you know that I'm not going to pick a Lovecraft-themed PT, because delightful as it was to read his stories alone, at the summer cabin in the middle of the night, in my teens, it also scared the crap out of me. I like to think I've grown more stable since, but you never know. ;)

Mistress of Her Own Lust is one I thought of, as was Unlight. My options also included Naked Flame and Shadow and Flame, but I think I've now more or less decided what to choose...

edit: xed with Pitch. Wee hee I like it! Very appropriate. :)

You should work on that basis..... Fea and Esty have changed theirs but I reckon they are the exceptions that prove the rule. So not to be done lightly. Others have things that suit them well but I still like mine best for me... It is like the Elvish self naming..

You're welcome. It took me a while longer to decide on one than the rest of you guys, but not too much longer. I think I've had mine for two or three months. Honestly, how much have I posted since then, though?

Honestly, though, I'd have to list most of the Downers with titles if I was to name all the ones I like. :D

Congratulations, Snowdog, on the new title. :)

Thank you much Boromir! Back in '99 when I found Barrow Downs with my EZBoard global account, I was Snowdog living in the high mountains of Washington State. I have since moved well south and west of there. This place, and two others are the only remaining vestige of my old Snowdog moniker. The rest have long since fell into ruin.

Congratulations to Huinesoron on his personal title: Overshadowed Eagle!

Trying it out here for the first time... thank you! I kind of feel like it's cheating just to translate my screenname, but it was the only thing I found that I felt comfortable with.

(I looked at "Shadowed by Great Wings", but it turns out that's not a Tolkien construction - it comes from Warhammer 40K, which is a bit far afield!)
