View Full Version : Who’s got the best Title? (Do I hear some Nominees?)

Since the ‘Best Avatars’ *sniff sniff* was closed *glances mischievously at the Barrow Wight* just before I was about to vote there, well, here’s a replacement.
OK, some members here have some titles just under their nick. Now, who do you think has the best one?
I say Morham’s (I think it’s Morham, forgive me if it’s wrong smilies/wink.gif
“Dead and Loving It’ is rather cute.

Bêthberry's Cryptic Aura has to be my favorite.
You really like mine? You should have seen me going through the thesaurus thinking of various combinations of names with alliteration. I wanted to get "enchantress" in there though, and "ethereal" is a very good word.

You really like mine?
'Course. I love alliteration. It's very pretty, too. Goes well with your avatars. It also reminds me of Charlotte Church's CD "Enchantment".
I used the thesaurus to find my PT, as well. Only, it wasn't for the PT, it was a few months back when I was writing a scene in a novel, and I'd used every similie for ghost that I knew, and just needed one more term... And I thought the word was so cool, I committed it to memory for future usage. E words rock. smilies/tongue.gif

VanimaEdhel

No, you cannot. I'm not sure if it will change when we get a large, large amount of people who have been around for a long time (you'd have to ask Barrow-Wight that one), but I do know that now, no matter how many you have, once you have a personal title, it does not change.

Well, my votes go to some of the oldies, but goodies... those who have been around for a while:
Samwise "Faithful Spirit" because it really sums up the character of Samwise in two simple words.
Lush "Fair and Cold" because I didn't realize until I re-read the books that it was an Eowyn reference... and I love that!
Birdland '"Ghastly Neekerbreeker" just because I've always liked the way it sounds!

Orual: Speaker of the Dead
yes, Ender's game and that whole series are awesome! I just finished Children of the Mind yesterday.
that was sort of off topic, but I do like that title. I will probably use Ghost in a Fog if I ever get a PT. I got the idea from a song that goes "step out the door like a ghost into a fog, where no one notices the contrast between white on white" or something like that.

Heren Istarion's "Deadnight Chanter" is a favorite of mine. It sounds ominous, quasi-mythical, reminiscent of African or West Indian shamanic ritual. My one criticism is that it fails to capture his joviality.
I admire Rimbaud's "The Perilous Poet," in keeping with his screen name and also his online persona (from what I have seen of his posts).
A few others that come to mind:
Sharkû's "Hungry Ghoul"
Mhoram's "Dead and Loving It"
Ulmo's "A Northen Soul"
all for different reasons, somewhat indescribable reasons. Mho's is just plain cool, Sharkey's is terse and a bit unnerving, and Ulmo's [Legolas's] is tinged (to my mind) with sorrow, that Tolkien-esque sense of 'decline'; very tragic (and even mythic) in feel.
Ah, but there are so many more - for the time being, I'm satisfied with bumping up this old gem and seeing who others nominate, now that so many BDers have great personal titles.
On a similar note: I can't wait to see what Fordim Hedgethistle chooses, when a title comes his way.

Lyta_Underhill
08-10-2004, 12:03 PM
Hmmmm....favorites...lots of 'em! Particulars include:
Seeker of the Straight Path (lindil)-this is probably the first title that really intrigued me, even before I read the Silmarillion! It has resonance beyond the reference!
Eidolon of a Took (Diamond18)--I admit I had to look up "Eidolon"
Fair and Cold (Lush)--plucked from the heart of Eowyn!
Sword of the Spirit (Raefindel)--another resonant title!
Zombie Cannibal (HCIsland)--just plain amusing!
Stormdancer of Doom (mark12_30)--Doomsayer, but a happy, elemental one! BWAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!
Dead and Loving It (Mhoram)--somehow, Mhoram registers an image of Leslie Nielsen as Dracula in my mind because of this title!
Registered User (Ainaserkewen) --this one looks like a mistake!?! Or a really good trick!
Deadnight Chanter (Heren Istarion)--sounds like what one might hear outside in the dead of night if you open your ears carefully! :)
Dread Horseman (Mister Underhill)--when I first saw this title, my first reaction was "be afraid...be VERY afraid!" ;)
There are more out there I enjoy, but these come to mind!
Cheers!

Aiwendil's "Late Istar" somehow seems to go very well with her nick. It sounds right together.
Just to clear this up: I don't think Aiwendil is a 'she'. I may be wrong, though. 'Aiwendil' means 'Bird-lover', and was Radagast the Brown's name in Valinor. At any rate, the "Late Istar" PT is very cool.

Deadnight Chanter makes me think of waking my annoying neighbors that stay up partying in their backyard (loudly) until past midnight...how would I wake them? Playing a bagpipe chanter of course...at four in the morning...and I don't play very well at all....

It is perfect, Fordim. I love all the alliterative ones I've seen: Saucey's Corpus Cacophonous, Kransha's newly-acquired Ubiquitous Urulóki, and piosenniel's Desultory Dwimmerlaik, to name a few. This one may take the cake, though I don't know how many of your contribution to this forum can be written off as 'gibbering'. ;)

No Perky, I did not have an official title before -- "Fordim the Magnificent" was merely what I called myself! ;)
And thanks for your compliments re the sound of the title, Firefoot. I thought a good sounding title would be appropriate -- "Cellar Door!"

Nice one Fordim....wait a minute? Didn't you already have a title? Did you change titles, or have I been drinking too much ent draught?
Too much Ent draught, m'lad.
I must admit that, when I had very few posts, I was much concerned with a future PT, but then, when the PM came today, I had forgotten about it. I also regret to say that I forgot Fordim's fabulous title suggestion (which will remain unmentioned). Now, I merely have what I have. I'm rather fond of it, though.
I always liked the alliteration fad in PT's. Many just struck me as neat. The only one I've EVER had to consult a dictionary about was Diamond18's 'Eidolon of a Took.' To this day 'Desultory Dwimmerlaik' is one of my favorites. I can't remember who it was that had 'Folly of Starlight' but I really like that one.
Fordim, is it just me, or did we both get titled on the same day? I didn't see your 'Gibbering Gibbet' before today, and I got mine via PM this morning. Seeing your title makes me think of Saruman's speech in The Voice of Saruman. I always enjoyed that, because I'm so attached to that polychromatic Istar.
P.S. Son of Numenor, kudos on being the first person in a long time to have a PT before reaching 500 posts. I can only assume that you have it because you're technically a mod, but I must admit that I like it, and can't hide the greenery in me. Mea culpa.
Son of Númenor
08-22-2004, 07:27 PM
I did indeed get it because I'm a mod. In that way, I feel inferior to other owners of a title. I can only hope that, when the BD administration really feels I am deserving of special recognition, they will send me a congratulatory PM. Fordim, is it just me, or did we both get titled on the same day?My understanding is that the administration tends to give titles out in 'waves'. Your wave just happens to be smaller than its recent predecessor.

Gibbering Gibbet...wow...try saying that five times fast!
Wait...
Nevermind, it's not that hard. Okay, anyway, I definitely like your new one, Fordim, and congrats! You too, Kransha!
My favorites...well...
Scent of Simbelmyne – Sophia - (Just pretend the cute little double-dot is there above the 'e') I love this one because it just seems kind of nostalgic to me.
Stormdancer of Doom – mark12_30 - I love thunderstorms, and just the thought of dancing through storms amuses me. :D
As far as the alliteration fad...I, too, hopped on that bandwagon after enjoying the splendidly alliterated PTs of others. ;)

Well, then you will be glad to know that I had to look up Urulóki in the Tolkien dictionary. ;) Now I am officially afraid of you ubiquitous presence.
Another good alliteritive one (whilst some of you are on the subject) is VanimaEdhel's Ethereal Enchantress.

Long deceased
The Wight with no name.

There are two I've always thought were exceptionally classy.
Mithadan (which means Grey Man, after all--) Spirit of Mist. Simple, and long-lasting.
Mister Underhill: Dread Horseman. The combination pairs Frodo's flight and the black rider. Nice trick.
Third-- it's new, but it's good: Night In Wight Satin. (I would have spelled knight with a K, though.)

SoN, if you were chosen to be a mod, then I'm pretty sure you deserved the title. I like to consider it a two way street: If you are honoured with a PT then that's great. However, if you're a relatively new member and you're made a mod -- now that is a compliment and attests that you already deserve a title. Of course, I could be wrong...*thoughtful look*
I guess what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't feel inferior.

I like Aylwen's Melody of Misery, and along with Imladris's Tears of the Phoenix, it is probably my favourite - although Diamond's Eidelon of a Took just makes me smile, simply because it uses the word 'eidelon' - it's like when one of my relatives called my cousin an 'omadhaun' and he actually looked it up - it makes you feel conned when you find that it means 'fool'! :D (Omadhaun is Irish for 'fool').
I am rather fond of my own, but if I was able to choose a new title, I think I would pick 'Angel on the Seventh Step' - anyone who has read Frank McCourt's autobiography 'Angela's Ashes' will understand the story of the Angel who brought babies and left them on the seventh step...the name and the stories with it from Frank's childish point of view just make me smile.

It is indeed, Encai. As well as that darned red dawn that accompanies blood being spilt at night. My other choices were Angel of Music (in loving honour of The Phantom of the Opera) and Untitled (because what's more ironic?). Cool, yes? I was worried it might be too long.... but I guess not. Yay.

Abercrombie - I think they can't be more than 15 or 20 characters long.
Feanor of the Peredhil

The preferred length is under 20 characters, but they make exceptions if the name is really cool. And they rather frown upon names like "Butterfly of the Happy Cloud Land" because not only is that reeeeally long, but it's also dreadfully undead.

Actually, if you want to be technical about it, fish don't breathe air molecules in the water; they breathe Oxygen molecules in the water.
But this also completely defeats the point of the "alive without breath" comment.

I just realized yesterday when I was reading TTT that Hookbill's title is from Gollum's poem.

as cold as death...

LMP has a great title. Bard Oder.... hehehe.
If Amanaduial the archer changes her title to "The brightness of starlight" then it would suit her intelligence and personality very well. You are far too precious to be in the shadow of anything my dear. ;)

Thanks Spawn... Thawn... Never mind.
Well, it was either that or "King of the World" but I didn't think Lord Wight would appreciate it. :p
Although I'm considering changing it to "Wizard in a call centre" but its a long time off.

The general requirements are 500+ posts and a record of solid contributions to the Downs. A high Rep rating is a good indication of the latter.
Unless you were just here a really long time. At this point, I haven't been on this board in who knows how long. Now just today, my 18th birthday, I decided to pop back in to see what was going on. I'm more of an Ephemeral Enchantress and and Ethereal one - coming back for a few posts, disappearing again, coming back. I haven't had a steady wave of posts in a long time. I did a few years ago, when I was posting regularly.
Without hoppa, it just hasn't been the same on here, to be honest - even though it's been so long, it's still hard for me to be back.

Congratulations morm, TORE, TGWBS, and dancing spawn!
I'm rather partial to Maundering Mage. (Although I don't know what Maundering means.)
dancing spawn: Does yours mean anything significant? It is kind of confusing me.
Also, I just looked up Scion in the dictionary, and so I must say I really like yours Nilp. I liked it before, but now that I understand it, I like it even better. :D
the guy who be short

My personal favourite out of the new four is also Raffish Rapscallion, even though I tend to associate "Rapscallion" with Eomer so I'm probably going to screw that up sometime in the future! :D It rolls off the tongue too.
I like all of them, though. Maundering Mage, the other alliterative one, should, in my opinion, have been Maundering Monkey though. :p Or 'Aundering Ape?
Mischievous Candle... I don't know why I like that. It brings to mind a beautifully fluttering flame, that might be why. Fire is lovely to watch, though less pleasant to touch.
I had to look up Raffish, Maundering and Scion too, so don't worry, Gurthang, you're not the only one with an abysmal vocabulary! And yes, that did make me appreciate Nilp's PT more, even if it does imply that all the rest of us are heretics... :p

I had to also...& I had to double-check on rapscalion.
Two of my faves would have to be Drummer in the Deep & Bringer of the Red Dawn.

I am most partial to SpM's Corpus Cacophonous. I know it's probably been stated before but I really think it's very clever. If you haven't looked it up do so at dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/) which after the downs is probably one of my favorite sites.

I rather like Orofaniel's Mighty Mouse of Mordor. I don't know if it's new, or if I only just noticed it for the first time a few weeks ago, but it definitely fits her avatar (a jumping mouse). I also find it funny, since I know somebody in RL whose nickname is Mighty Mouse.

Is there any one I missed that got one? :)

Kath, i'm in love with your Everlasting Whiteness. It's great.
Kitanna, exactly why did you choose Child of the West?
And Perky, still can't think of yours? You really should get a move on with that. :p Just kidding! I still think you should take Eatible Ent.

Kitanna, exactly why did you choose Child of the West?
I was flipping through my ROTK book looking for something I could use as a personal title. And then I found:
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West
So I liked it and for some reason I thought it fit me.
Something to do with Taniquetil maybe?
Sorry Mith never saw that. No actually it never was to do with anything LotR. Nilp and I were communicating while I was on holiday and when I told him I didn't tan he came up with that and suggested it for a PT if I was ever given one. That is why there's a wink at the end of his question:
I love your personal title, Kath. Who thought it up, and what does it mean?
It does sound quite LotRish though which is good!

I don't have The Silm with me so I can't quote it, but Everlasting Whiteness *does* have something to do with, if not directly pertaining to, Oiolossë. So, Kath, you know that wasn't a Nilp original. ;)
Nilp: :p

LOL .... If I had an HI-like inclination towards surveys.... I am sure that it would reveal that a disproportionate number of downers don't tan. We have an awful lot of redheads and the two rarely combine and a number of our brunettes are of the pale and interesting variety. I wonder if it because a pale complexion is generally regarded more positively in Tolkien than in the outside world or just that we spent more time inside reading....
As for Child of the West .....as well as Gwaihir's song, Bilbo is described as thus by Thorin on his death bed " There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. " Another lovely choice :D

I'm pretty sure it's the result of staying inside and reading while others go to the beach, but perhaps we can use the first thing as a snobby excuse for our paleness. ;)

Perhaps we should have some sort of tanning survey. I can see HI undertaking it as part of his Public Research.
As a brown boy, it's very hard for me not to tan. :D Though my sister does burn, inexplicably.
In addition, I read outside. Well, now and again, if the pink blossom trees are in bloom.

Eek ... I thought my lack of tanning unless the freckles join up was due to inheriting super delicate and pale skin from my welsh grandmother ... now it seems I am relate to gollum :(

Dead Serious
Strangely enough, that was going to be the motto for The Downer newspaper. If you look at where it now says "Dead and rotten" it was going to be Dead Serious. I can't remember why I changed it... 'Dead and rotten' isn't even funny.
