I know, hey Wilwa? We might have a small population, but we are the second biggest country in the world. I just wish that we'd get more imagrants, because they either all go back to their homeland, or move to the U.S., so that doesn't help increase or population. But oh well, I just hope nobody gets offended by this post.

I'm from South County, RI, which is smalltown and agricultural, like the Southfarthing, but colder at the moment. There are very few streetlights in our part of town, which means you can see those nice elvish stars at night (and all the planes that that will land at PVD... Look! Eagles!) ...There is not much pollution at all. About a mile away there are trails in the woods (I think of that as Woody End.). About six miles away there is a state park with many more trails (Chetwood, and the Road to Rivendell.)

I also live in the woods: primarily oak woods, which are very acid. But here and there are beech groves, which are very lovely and delightful, and which act a bit like mallorns in that they keep their faded-golden leaves through the winter (at least, they try) and their trunks are a lovely silver-grey. I have three little groupings of them on our lot which I have named Lorien, Fangorn, and The Old Forest. They are only about fifty feet across, so it's just wishful thinking on my part. But the names have stuck. My husband can be heard saying such things as "I put the ladder out by Fangorn Forest."

Down the road a ways there's a black dog I've nicknamed Naz.

I'm from Westchester, New York, a county right outside of New York City. The town I live in is very small and I actually live on top of a small mountain just outside the town. I'm really on the border of two towns to be more precise. I'm technically in one town, but our mail is brought by the other, so our street address is the latter.

I'm sorry I'm not saying the town names. I'm just rather protective of my personal information, especially lately, and these are pretty small towns, but they can be searched easily online I've found.

I live pretty near to Indian Point Nuclear Power Facility - much to my disappointment, really. The sirens wouldn't do my family much good if anything were to happen. Other than the unnatural warmth from the nuclear power facility in the water, there isn't really pollution - air, light or otherwise - near to me. My house is technically built on old swampland that used to belong to a large farm, and there is sparse woods surrounding my house.

It's in an ideal location in that I can just hop a train to the city and be at Grand Central in about 45 minutes on an Express, but I'm far enough away that city traffic doesn't affect me at all. Well, actually since my school is between my house and the city, I do get caught in rush hour traffic both ways when I'm driving to school.

I drive on an Underhill Ave. when I'm coming home from school and, in fact, most other places - a fact which I think is pretty interesting. I always make Underhill jokes when I'm on it, much to many people's chagrin. I do wish my area looked more Tolkien-like, but there are some beautiful woods in some areas not too far away. They aren't quite Fangorn or Mirkwood, but they are beautiful. We also have some very, very gorgeous mountains here and there that are just covered in leafy green trees during the spring and summer. Then they turn beautiful colors in the fall.

So, while my area isn't quite so Tolkienesque, I still love it.

Wilwarin are you thinking of saint john new brunswick or st johns newfoundland? lol because i dont find saint john beautiful...except of course for my little section of the city,im in a forest, with a mountain I named mout doom (dont ask) lol well i can see the whole city from the top and on clear days nova scotia comes into view.

I'm from the DFW area in Texas. (Although I'm dwelling at the moment in College Station, same state...) If you look at a geographic map (as opposed to political) of the U.S., you'll see that the eastern half of the country is green. The western half, for the most part, is tan or brown. The diving line between green and brown runs through the middle of the DFW Metroplex. East of Dallas, the land is forested, at times heavily - pine trees! West of Fort Worth, the land is treeless, rolling, grassy hills. I've seen these hills black and charred from the grassfires we deal with all too often in the warm months (i.e. most of the year).

My home, in the city but close to more rural areas, is between Fort Worth and Dallas. I couldn't get more on the line! The local manifestations are scrubby post oak trees, interspersed with the unbiquitous tall grass, only green in March, when there's plenty of rain.

Doesn't sound very inviting, does it? And yet I love it. I've traveled so much through Texas; it's so varied, so hard to describe in terms of one place. If anything, I'd say it resembles Eregion more than anything. I get the idea of windswept open lands with vegetation varying from scrub to tall trees. We haven't many tall trees in my part of Texas, nothing like 80-foot Georgia pines; but I love our pecan trees. They are beautiful trees, and some of the biggest that grow here. (They don't grow in College Station voluntarily... grr.)

The thing that knocks out Eregion as a possibility is the overall climate. Being drier than coastal areas, our summer highs routinely top 100 (Fahrenheit). We starting taking notice when we set streaks of consecutive 100+ days; the record is 113. A few summers ago we went well over a month at 100+, and if I recall correctly we went more than two months without any measurable precipitation. Those were records, and not the ordinary. But our winters are probably, to most of you, very warm as well. Getting down in the teens is very cold to us - it happens about once a winter - and single-digits are quite unusual. The winter after I was born was very cold: it didn't just get into the teens for one night, it stayed there for some time. That was so cold it killed many, many plants and shrubs. My grandparents had to replace the entire hedge around their yard. So temperature-wise, we belong south of Mordor - perhaps even in Umbar!

I won't start into the College Station climate. Suffice it to say that, in my opinion, the city is built on the soggy Brazos River flood plain, afflicted with Gulf of Mexico humidty, and vegetated by 20-foot 'trees.' I have grown to like live oaks, though. (Here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=362770&postcount=8)'s a picture of one famous one on my campus.) Live oaks have dark green, glossy, oval-shaped leaves, similar to holly without the spines. They're called 'live' because they don't lose them all winter. Instead, they drop them in the spring, just in time for the new leaves. The live oak leaves are falling right now. :)

Helen, I love beech trees! I've only ever seen them in Ukraine, nearly two years ago. I wonder if there's any way to grow them here. :(

F. grandiflora, the American Beech, is found wild from New Brunswick to Florida and Texas.

So I'd guess, give it a well-drained spot, sandy soil, hilltop or hillside (no swamps) and you might be able to grow one of Tolkien's Almost-Mallorns, even down there in Texas.

And my geographical map of africa was hightly innaccurate - since the atlas at home dated form the 50s and so it had Rhodesia and Tanganika and so forth :o

Some of the more recent history books do have the more current events, but since teachers seem to think that anything more recent than the Roaring Twenties is not cruicial to our learning, they plan the curriculum so that come June, we've just gotten into WWII. I did look ahead in last year's history book though, and found a short paragraph on September 11th. It was dwarfed by the incredibly huge picture of George W. Bush shaking hands with a foreign guy that I don't know the identity of.

Now Biology books... those were great. "It is the year 2005 and a silver space craft has just been launched and is on the way to our new colonies on Mars." Not. Even. Joking.

As for my location... I love it. Everybody should move to middle-of-nowhere New York. It's beautiful, and unlike last summer, this spring is warm. And sunny. With a warm breeze, budding trees, and flowers blooming everywhere. And if you look closely you can see muskrats swimming around in the old abandoned canal (that by all rights should not have any water in it right now. Thanks a lot, neighbors who leveled their land and tossed the excess earth into the drainage area). Ah, and the mosquitos that hover in clouds in my back yard... They breed in the canal, you know. But yes... move to New York. Regardless of the mosquitos and the spring-y smell of manure being spread on fields... it really is quite pretty. Reminds me of the Shire, when it's warm and sunny like it is now.

I'm with Fea and all the t-shirts that tourists can buy every ten feet in NYC: I [heart] New York. It's got everything. The lovely central regions where Fea lives, the heinously snowy part near Canada where I'm probably going to college :eek: , Long Island, Land of Suburbia, and a big, smelly city that's loads of fun.

If there were a happy medium between central NY and NYC (NOT suburbia, that doesn't count) then I would move there straight away. The perfect combination of quirky city bustle and nature would give me a permanent home.

Don't misunderstand me, I love my pc and find them a valuable tool in the classroom, but they will never replace books.

I have been incredibly self-indulgent this term. I am reading 'The Hobbit' with a Year 7 class and 'The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents' by Terry Pratchett, with a Year 8 group. They are enjoying both books and I often have to shut my classroom door in case their laughter disturbs other classes :D

Canadian 'Downers! I have a Question that's been bothering me today...

There was a guy (a Yorkshireman) walking round my office today with a t-shirt on which said "Eh!" in huge letters on the front and on the back it said "Canada!" and had a maple leaf emblem. What's that all about?

I live down in the Garden of England, which is Kent for all you non-British people, in a little town by the name of Faversham. Near enough to Dover, Ashford and London for travel and entertainment to be never more than 2 hours away it is a great place to live! The town itself is famous for being the stopping point between 2 important cities and also for it's incredible amount of pubs, I think we have 40 odd.

I spend some of the year up near Aman and Hookbill though, as my mums family comes from Lancashire and we go to visit quite often.

Cheers Glirdan! It was the "Eh!" bit that puzzled me. I thought what's the slogan "Eh!" got to do with Canada. So I suppose it would be like someone from Canada going to Yorkshire on holiday and returning with a shirt that had the slogan "Ey Up!" on it?! ;)

I'm from Texas, yep, and AGAINST what all the other Texans here have said... I AM a cowperson. In my spare time I've fix fences, walk around cow pies/chips (makes you hungry, don't it?) , and stalk armadillos. Well... my FREE free time, when I can get out of the Houston suburbs.

My heart belongs to my family's ranch, though, in a small town just two hours outside of Houston: Muldoon, TX. Oh... and when I say small I mean that the population is around 35, and you can take a "City tour" for just under 5 minutes... and thats using all three main roads! It has three churches, a post office, a BRAND NEW firestation, and thats about it except of houses. If that isn't distrubing enough for you, Haus, 90% of the population is related to me! dundundun!

Since beginning the year long experience of living just several doors down from several Canadians (at my school for the hockey, as it were), my own accent has taken on such quality that I ask questions uh-boat language differences, but that's not a bad thing, eh?

And because of a friend from home who adopted her friend's accent, I've also started calling my hometown my hoom-tone.

Really, dialect has less to do with where you live than who you live with or converse with on a regular basis. And if you live in an accentedly diverse dorm, you pick up all kinds of neat pronunciations. :D

There's some sort of bug on the site! Sometimes small red pins appear totally out of place. I found myself and Hookbill freezing on the shores of Greenland a minute ago. I agree with this sentiment. There's a reason I'm not on the map. I don't even carry a cell phone, that's how out-of-reach I like to remain. :) And much as I like the map, I'm quite content with people knowing only that I live in upstate NY.

I didn't say you had poor english! Many non-native english-speakers aren't poor in it. Consider for example Estelyn Telcontar, dancing spawn of ungoliant or HerenIstarion. If you didn't know where were they from, would you know they weren't native english-speakers? (My point is that many non-native english-speakers have fluent english.)

I wouldn't worry. I put in my zip code and then zoomed in to see how close the pin was to my actual location. It was all the way over by my cousin's house. Zip codes cover too large an area to find someone with it.

Now that I've said that, is there any way you can move your pin, or place a pin exactly where you want it, instead of having to let the thing place it for you using your zip code? I'd like to do that. That map is awesome. It actually shows my driveway! I could stick the pin right on top of the room where I'm sitting right now. Frankly, I don't care if some Downer finds me. It would just be a pleasant surprise.

I thought of that, given that my actual zip code encompasses a fairly small area and is a bit less congested than the area around my pin near South and Broad. Therefore, the zip code I gave is several miles from my real address. Not that I think anyone would want to look for me anyway.

I guess this is a reasonable solution if anyone is concerned about being located but still wants to participate.

That was exactly why I chose not to do it... my zip code is for a town which is large in population but on the whole pretty small. I don't want to be that specific, especially when I zoomed in on my fair isle until I indeed located my street. :eek:

Barton is now a suburb of New Milton which is the Post Town so it is really "Barton-on-Sea, New Milton" for me at least... but Barton was an Invalid City which made me laugh since we have the highest percentage of over 60s in the country. Silver, I know, has blue veins in mountainous strata, but it could be a number of things there... if it is silver, don't be afraid to share any, Mith. :p

In all seriousness, I don't pretend to be a geologist... though I have had a killer time digging out and presenting my chemistry teacher with the scare of his lifetime: uranium ore! It really isn't as dangerous as science leads on... I throw it at my sisters all the time!

As for the mapping (and the topic), my pointer is suprisingly close by! if one were to zoom out away from it 15%, my cul'du'sac is readible. I'd say thats an amazing feat for what little information I gave it to go after. Nice : )

It isn't bright blue - just a kind of wedgewood blue.. I don't know much about it ..I mean why would they teach us about our own location when they could tell you about the Borneo Sumba? ;)

I only found a fossil once. It was lovely a little fern almost complete... unfortunately I was only looking because a we were having a Beach barbie with the German exchange students - and one of them was really interested ...good manners seemed to dictate I offer it to her ... and the wretch accepted :(

A few mils west and south are best known for dinosaurs - Dorset's jurassic coast and of course the Isle of Wight about 3 miles across the oggin...

Farael comes to the 'downs from the dark forests and small town of Buenos Aires, Argentina... which is on south america... you know? that big chunk of land to the south of Mexico.

You guys would not believe the questions people have asked so here are some facts about the country where I was born:

-South America goes down south almost as far as the border between US and Canada... and Argentina is on the southern end of South America. Still it is a fairly big country so where I used to live is not nearly as cold as where I live now (Winnipeg, Canada)

-We did have four seasons, but our winters never got any worse than maybe two degrees below zero with the windchill (my fellow canadians usually laugh at this)

-Even though I said dark forests and small town, I was being sarcastic... Buenos Aires is the size of NYC. Still I like it better in a smaller town like this one.

-Here's a crazy one I thought everyone would know about it... yet I found out many people did not. Right now, it is the end of Spring, almost Summer in Argentina. Seasons are inverted when you cross the Ecuator.

Now one fact about myself, as I've seen people talking about fossils in here... I happened to have some (you can buy them on street fairs in the city) the only problem is that fossils are, basically, stones... and stones are heavy.... and when you move from Argentina to Canada you want to save space and weight!! so my lovely fossils are still waiting for me on a friend's house. I had some nice pieces... if anyone is interested send me an IM and I'll tell you about them (no, I did not have a Dinosaur... yet)

Here in Florida, the landscapers are messing up the trees. Treebeard would take about 500 years just to switch it back to normal. In the central, non coastal parts of lorida, palm trees are put up, next to native oak and pine. In West Palm Beach, I saw a bunch of oak trees being planted 40 yards from the Atlantic! Its tourism at work....Fanghorn would have a word. :)

Strangely enough, there probably were a lot of woods at one time all the way up and down the Lancashire coast - this will have been a long time ago. They ran up to the edges of the meres, and when they fell, they went into the waters which would shift in size and shape many times over the centuries. That's where all the Bog Oaks come from that break the ploughs. Fleetwood is at the Northern end of one of the old meres that have long since been drained away.

The story about the Hesketh family might be right though, as they also had much to do with building Southport, being the big landowning family, and there's also Hesketh Bank - about 15 miles as the bird flies from Fleetwood but about 50 by car! There's also Fleet Street, the locals' name for the road from Ormskirk to Southport.

Apparently, if you are born in Southport you are known as a 'sand-grounder', this has always confused me, seeing as the majority of the ground is concrete and the beech is always flooded. Or at least, it is whenever I go there.

A lot of Southport is built on sandbanks and much of the rest of it on reclaimed land. Some of the houses were built on 'rafts'. I used to remember a lot of houses that were at crazy angles where the foundations had slowly sunk into the marshland! The beach has changed a lot since they stopped doing so much dredging in the Ribble, so they have a tide that actually comes up to the sea wall nowadays!

Well I met a couple from Hamburg and traveled with them in Chile and they used to say that Danish was just a bad copy of German. . . There are a lot of simulareties, but of course they are very different as well. Kind of like Dutch and German (there is also alot of Dutch words I can understand). I usually sneer a little at t-shirts with overplayed logos, but I'll never get sick of 'Ithaca is Gorges,' nor will I become bored with places like Buttermilk Falls and that fantastic bridge over the gorge alongside the Cornell art museum. *melt*

Ithaca is one of the few places in Upstate that I actively like. Watkins Glen is similar in geographical spirit. I absolutely love driving along and seeing unexpected tall waterfalls coming over the edge of cliff faces. Pretty, pretty.

Well, that's not terribly far off. My family is largely of Polish/Russian/Ukrainian heritage. My screen name here looks a lot like some of my relatives' surnames. When people ask things like, "what's your mother's maiden name?" you say it and start spelling before they even ask. And they still look at you like you just sprouted mushrooms in your nostrils. :D

Prexactly. And I'm sure if you tried it, you would probably understand how bored (or drunk, as Ibrin suggested hehe) you would have to be to gain amusement from that.

I'm actually from a small college town with bored fraternity boys. Fortunately, they don't go to my even smaller hometown to amuse themselves. That could be quite interesting.


Sidenote. Phantom, I didn't know you were from Omaha? Fascinating. I went up to Papillion a few months ago for a concert, and my step-brother goes to college up there, but that's not worth more than a mention. Are you too cursing the weather, or are you far enough from the Lincon/Crete area that you've escaped the nastiness?
